The reason why I chose Amazon.com and no other site is quite funny, rather silly :

Actually I was badly in need of a select booktitle last year, but not being able to find it anywhere even at

Crossword, Granth and Fabmart, I got seriously dampened. It was sited at Fabmall.com -Bangalore but then it was labelled out of stock (almost a year now and still it’s out of stock there). Searching hard and still not able to spot the book in any good stores of India, I thought to try in some foreign e-shop.

Exactly at that time my brother-in-law came from Germany and he carried an old edition of USA Today, which held a big advertisement of Amazon.com vying with the ads like FedEx, Intel and HongKong Government. This made me reason smartly that as it is a big and respected name in the West, the site won’t atleast ’Run away with my money’ (what an Indian fears the most). Thus, the credibility factor forced me to tie up with this net major. That very day I plunged into the site and in seconds came out with my book. The whole site was tidily organized and well arranged which made it very easy to shop and place the order. To add, the site had some real biiiiig wonders in it. You can get practically anything of your choice here. Undoubtedly the first place I saw where there was no concept of dearth of books. Every book I saw had scores of reviews written on it. The reviews written were very intelligent and were sufficient to help anyone in dilemma to choose what exactly he wants.

But as a rule, without any sour experience my journey never completes, came the monetary aspect. The actual book costed 10 US $, but by including transportation and handling charges, the sum rose to a whopping 22 US $ ! I never knew it would grow so heavy! and further, as a typical Indian dont possess a credit card, the next obstacle was obviously to find a way to send money to the Seattle located address.

An alien to field of foreign money transfer, it took me a deal time to know which bank does this particular favor to strangers. It happened to be SBIndia where those Sarkari babus practically got on my nerves(the FBI manquès reacted as I would call Anthrax with the order). I finally got the work done by paying an additional $2 equivalent INR over the billing amount and they gave me a cheque inscribed with the name of Chase Manhattan Bank on it.

Thus the thing was I ended up paying $24 for a $10 book cuz I read somewhere that only a MAN will pay $2 for a $1 thing ’which he needs’.

Further next, the estimated delivery claim.... As stated on the confirmation page it was 12 - 20 days but I received the book only after 45 days. Checks ur patience naa?? he he

This all made me feel that the site lacks versatility in dealing with foreign orders. If it has to become a house hold name in a country like us, it requires some betterment. No doubt the site carries the biggest and best selection on the planet.........all it needs is to play a different plan to lure people living in 3rd world and developing nations.
