When Ashu Trikha´s debut Deewanapan released nobody really expected anything from it. It took the industry by surprise when the film actually did average business at the box office. . With his follow up venture Alag, he goes down a road which has never been traveled. The science fiction genre is gaining prominence in Bollywood . Alag falls in the same genre, but is completely new to the Bollywood audience. The film mixes the paranormal and science however the results aren´t up to the mark.

What could have been a very interesting film suffers due to a underdeveloped script and especially the tacky special effects. Still he should be applauded for trying something new and original, even if it was too ambitious of a project.

Tejas Rastogi, has some unusual features who's discovered living in the basement of a remote farmhouse. He's never interacted with people, he's read more books in these 20-years than most people do in a lifetime, but after his father's sudden death, he must go out and face the world.

Tejas is admitted into a centre for orphans with criminal backgrounds. Now, the dean's daughter, Dia Mirza befriends him, but he's constantly picked on by the other boys at the centre. And now he's blessed with all these special powers that enable him to heal the wounded, survive electric currents and lightning, and fight evil with destruction.

In his own little way, Tejas is trying to make the world a better place, but then an evil scientist kidnaps him with the intention of using him as a lab rat for an experiment.

First things first, credit must be given where it is due.Ashu Trikha deserves a pat on the back for trying something new. This is definitely an experiment, and a brave one at that.

Hiowever his script needed a lot more work, it´s as if he wrote a rough draft and left it at that. The film would have come across much better had the director decided to read his script through a few more times and tweak it.

There are loopholes galore and a lot of instances are left unexplained.Somes equences are well done, but some fails miserably to evoke mirth .

Akshay Kapoor gives his finest performance yet, the scenes with Diya just have so much resonance that only those who have lived a full life could truly grasp its emotional complexities .

The film would have actually benefited from no songs. SFX effects are passable.

Alag was supposed to be a good entertainer, but the end product is a waste of time. With a novel concept you´d think that the film would have managed to make a mark, but in the end you feel cheated.. In short the movie has no soul. Watch on DVD if you must.
