From big names we expect bigger things & that takes the graph of expectations to the maximum altitude at times, which sometimes succeed in giving us what we expected but most of the time we are upset with the final outcome.
Even though I watch films without any expectations still Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani can be a prime example of it.
The film starts well with some funny scenes & the existence of Happy Club with the motive to spread happiness does bring smile to your face, which fades soon.
Ranbir Kapoor is the president of the club & by mistake kidnaps Katrina. He falls in love with her, not knowing till she tells him that she is in love with Upen Patel. And thereafter what happens for the rest 75 minutes is predictable & the end makes you proud of your predictions. You get full marks for it.
Had it not been for some extremely funny scenes, some light moments & some rib tickling one liners, the film would have fallen flat on its face. Actually that is what keeps you entertained during the first half even though nothing much happens to the story as it moves at a sloth like pace.
The writing fails miserably in the second half as the narration & execution becomes routine run of the mill stuff & the climax follows the path of Santoshi’s yesteryear's’ film Andaz Apna Apna, though it makes you laugh but then you were not unaware of it.
The inclusion of Govind Namdeo as a political leader & his greed to win election looks like a forced character to unite the lead stars at the end. So was the entry of Salman Khan.
Raj Kumar Santoshi has always been known for making meaningful cinema & people do look forward to his films. Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani directed by him is unfortunately not of his class as the second half gives you the déjà vu feeling & that is where the boredom envelops you.
Pritam has composed few good tunes.
Upen Patel has been wasted & he fails to leave any impact on the viewers. Katrina Kaif looked beautiful & has performed well. She is growing as an actress for sure.
Darshan Jariwala is a surprise for all who thinks that he cannot handle light moments.
The film if at all is worth a watch is only due to the presence of Ranbir Kapoor. He is adorable throughout & has given an award winning performance. Be it comical scene, emotional scenes, dance sequences or whatever he pressed the right notes every time. Watch him perform like Shammi Kapoor in a sequence & you know the talent that he possesses.
Only for his performance & the funny sequences the film gets 2.75 out of 5. Over all despite of many flaws its not a bad film, miss it & you haven’t missed a masterpiece, similarly you won’t be watching a masterpiece either even if you prefer to watch.
