Now a days walkmans do come in good variety with different models and features. Walkmans with radios, mono small speakers, Dolby facility, feather touch buttons are very common. A good Walkman would cost around 800-1000 Rs. While a Discmans are priced around 3000 Rs. Also you can get a radio within the same 800 Rs. Walkman. Not everyone is music fanatic always thriving for more music and good music systems. Some just like to listen for passing time or getting peace of mind. Also for a small need of entertainment during travels spending 800 is not a bad deal. That’s one reason to use walkmans.

I used to listen to Mp3s and few audio CDs. The obvious problem with listening on computers is time it takes to boot. Also the output is very less. That’s a different matter altogether. But to put it in simple words it is not Portable and Practical.

Tape Recorder has it’s own merits and demerits. Noise, sound quality, rewinding forwarding starts to get on nerves after some time. Durability of tapes is better than CD players. Low prize of cassettes has played a major role in survival of Tape Recorders. But as far as New Hindi Film music is concerned CDs are also low prized and easily affordable. Still cassettes have there own advantages and flavor. I don’t think cassette players and cassettes will be completely outdated.

Similar to Aiwa TS-203 this one also has a radio with FM and AM bands. What I most like about it is the clarity. It doesn’t have any external antenna still FM is played with a crystal clear sound. I think the earphone act as a kind of antenna. Whenever the earphone wire is disturbed or moved the radio sound be disturbed.

I have left this awesome feature for the end. This Player is as light as feather and as slender as thread. All buttons on the top make it more compact. But a possible disadvantage could be that wires connecting these buttons and circuit are made to bend.

I have used it for more than 2 years and so far have no problem at all. Sound quality is intact.

What amazed me is the sound quality with the cassette player. I’m usually a hater of cassette players including my Walkman for the noise rich sound qualities. Separate button is provided for BASS enhancement. Pity is that the speakers don’t support extreme low frequencies and sound tends to vibrate and distortion creeps in.

The warranty on the product is 6 months. Major drawback of the player is its size. These days you get players with similar capabilities of the size of Discman. Though smaller the size more the prize is one more equation. (It’s not that big as it sounds from my statements). I really appreciate human technology and the way developments have taken place in electronics department. You come up with another encoding music file format, which beats MP3; you’ll soon get it included in coming systems.

Other way to defend the sound quality is the explanations I gave earlier also. I have a Videocon music system to play any kind of music but still for journeys and small commutes I use my tiny little Walkman. Who cares about sound quality in the presence of already present loud train or bus noise? Discman would be a waste in such case. Buying a Walkman need not be a problem. To me there aren’t many choices in selection of Walkman because of less number of features. Either you choose Brand name or you choose price. Exceptions are those Hi-Fi feather touch button digital Walkmans. But remember have few bucks in your pocket.
