THE REVIEW

BEFORE I begin my review formally, I must confess this one thing that will probably anger a few of you, that I have almost no knowledge about most movies and I am absolutely not interested in following them up. I am writing this review purely based on what I know of Miss Rai from a few movies of hers that I have seen and therefore, probably, I might not write something completely accurate?but then you must forgive me? After all, it?s good that a class twelve student says he doesn?t know much about movies, I daresay!

LE FEMME FATALE

AISHWARYA Rai started as a beauty queen and model, graduated to movies and elevated herself to being an ambassador for Indian movies abroad so to say, and has finally perfected for herself a place in the history of Indian cinema that will probably never be snatched from her again. Aishwarya Rai is not a mere actor any longer?she is an institution in herself. There is no actor or model like her today?and that hurts most of that lot. She is the most imitated and the most highly envied woman of this country, unsurprisingly so. What makes her such a wonder? What makes her so great?

UNDOUBTEDLY, it is her beauty! Aishwarya Rai epitomizes the beauty of an Indian woman?the serene, imperturbable and pacifying beauty of the Indian woman, whose eyes glow with a strange warmth and whose smile is heavenly, yet mingled with a tinge of melancholy? whose countenance itself radiates gamboling laughter, yet a tender sadness of an enigmatic kind? Large, kind, gentle eyes that open to you simply, yet that search you deeply, that probe into your own eyes, softly yet certainly? Eyes that, once you look into them, will hold your vision for a long time to come?

She is indescribable?

YET one must not get carried away simply by her looks because heavenly looks don?t always make a great actor! Still, even as an actor, she is unparalleled. Her deep and impeccable understanding of her character Nandini in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and her flawless and gripping performance as Paro in Devdas are almost the stuff of legend, without doubt. Then I have seen only flitting scenes of Chokher Bali and Raincoat and I have to confess she is flawless in those trailers. My knowledge of her career is limited just to that and nothing more. But then again, I know the loveliest parts of it, don?t I?

WHAT DOES THE TITLE MEAN?

The greatness of the greatest is undone by their own greatness. Who is to blame Aishwarya for the fact that virtually every third male in this country would do anything to hold her hand once in his life? Who is to blame her if a certain angry monsieur Salman Khan could not tolerate being away from her? Yet, one wonders why was this woman so quiet when two men, Monsieur Oberoi and Monsieur Khan, battled it out like rustics for her? Then again, what could she have done or said?

The way things went on, I felt almost sure it was correct when I read (someone?s opinion in a weekly) that Rai had been playing around with Khan and got tired of him, which is why she took to manipulating Vivek. But then again, tell me?who would want to go around with someone as psychotic and unpredictable with Salman?

These questions don?t have answers that I need to know for myself. In fact, these are questions that should not be asked in the first place. Still, one wonders? For the personal attributes of an icon will catch everyone?s eye? The greatest must remain forever transparent? For their greatness is their strength, yet their greatest folly? The greatness lies not entirely in attaining it? some of it lies in sustaining it, maintaining it and fortifying it? Only a few are meant to be great? Others are washed upon the shore by the waves of luck?
