I have an Airtel mobile life-time connection in West Bengal, valid till the year 2024. The number is 9933044320. As I have been travelling outside Bengal for about a month, the phone has not been much in use. Last week I began receiving SMS alerts from AV-Airtel, saying - 'URGENT: Ur Airtel Service will STOP if we don't receive ur Proof of Add & ID, Passport Photo & Form. SUBMIT IMMEDIATELY to enjoy uninterrupted services.'
As I had submitted all documents etc while taking the connection some years ago, I sent an e-mail to Airtel customtakeouter Service in Kolkata asking why they wanted me to submit the documents and photo once again and why I was getting these SMS threats. A copy of the e-mail was sent to the Nodal Officer of Airtel in Kolkata. I have received replies from 121@airtel.in acknowledging and thanking me for my e-mail. It has been explained that TRAI has asked for re-verification of the documents. It has been reported by the news media that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sought re-verification of documents. The last date was Oct 31, 2010 but has been extended up to Dec 31, 2010.
Still, I have received an e-mail from 121@airtel.in stating that 'In case of non receipt of documents, the Outgoing and Incoming services will be blocked in 3 days rRajeev_Vermactively. The number will be permanently deactivated in 30 days.' How can Airtel deactivate the number when the last date for re-verification has been extended till Dec 31, 2010? Despite the e-mail correspondence, I have again received the SMS threat of disconnection. There are other people I know in Bengal and in other places who have not received the SMS threat. I have a suspicion that Airtel is trying to wriggle out of life-time plan agreements to boost its income by dubious means.
