Help & Support:

Having used Airtel and reasonably happy with the stable connectivity, decided to apply for the Fibernet service at my Chennai residence.

The objective was to upgrade from the existing Airtel ADSL to Fibernet and as most Airtel customers would know, the customer support team still is one of the most disconnected and duffer teams you'd ever come across.

My earlier plan:

  • ADSL connection(meaning wired copper cable connection with telephone)

  • 16MBPS download speed \ 700KBPS upload speed

  • 125GB data with FUP of 512KBPS unlimited

  • INR 3, 400+ taxes= approx. INR 3800 a month

Plan for upgrade:

  • Fibernet connection(Optic fiber with faster network speeds and data upload rate)

  • 40MBPS download \ 5MBPS upload speed

  • 120GB data with FUP of 512KBPS unlimited

  • INR 1, 500+ taxes= approx. INR 1, 700 a month

The Airtel support team registered a ticket on my behalf. For any metric-pass it is obvious that the former plan provides them way more revenue than the Fibernet. The expected have happened. They will not permit me to upgrade.

After chasing them for several weeks and escalating on their Twitter handle, different customer support reps started calling me to give contradicting details. Some even told me that there are no Fibernet facility available in Chennai! Ironically, the fibernet contractor and my neighbour(who took the fibernet connections a few weeks back) were sitting beside me while these guys were calling me to inform about lack of fibernet. LoL!

The vendor suggested me to take a fresh connection and took INR 1, 000 from me as cheque, 2 passport size photographs and a copy of my DL(evidence for address+ identity). I signed a form and the next day the connection was provided.

Note: At least in Chennai, the Airtel vendor for ADSL and Fibernet services are different.

The Airtel guys till date do not have a clue that I have 2 different connections running. I am planning to disconnect the ADSL connection as that is costing me more than twice as my faster connection.

Now the fibernet experience:

  • Quite faster, especially the data uploads and considerably quicker than it used to be.

  • Connection is stable, like the ADSL network. No issues so far

  • Pricing is amazing and is now directly competing with other local Fibernet providers like RAAJNET and regional players like ACTBROADBAND etc.
