There are number of other private airlines in India now. Jet Airways, Air Deccan, Spice Jet, Go Air, Kingfisher, to name a few important one’s plus others on the way.
Indian Airlines is a government owned airline and totally sucks. Avoid them as much as you can. I think they have a decent safety record, but have the oldest fleet compared to the newer airlines. I recently flew them back from Mumbai (Bombay). The meal was below average, pathetic service and the plane
