I watched the movie Agneepath, here in Johannesburg. After multiple attempts, I managed to get tickets at Cine centre, Killarney mall. The screens at Monte Casino were sold out for all the shows during the weekend. This explains how much of hype the movie has created even in overseas, leave alone the domestic market.
About the movie:
The movie is good. Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt are the main show-stealers. Both of them share the screen space almost equally and besides them we just have Om Puri and Rishi Kapoor playing pivotal roles. All other actors are just for name sake(including Priyanka Chopra).
Background music is good enough to maintain the thrill throughout the movie. Editing is well done too.
Locations and picturisation deserve a special mention, and so does Sanjay Dutt's looks. I haven't seen Sanjay Dutt fit in a better character than this one. The tattooed arms, black robes, pierced ears, shaved head, all give him a look of a deadly demon.
A few scenes and locations such as Sanjay Dutt's empire seems to be inspired from Harry Potter or other such Vampire movies. No need to mention about the music. Chikni Chameli had set the box office on fire months before the movie released, adding to the hype. There are a few other songs in the movie that are situation and move along with the story.
The movie is close to 3 hours long, but except for some 10 mins in second half which gets a little bit emotional for the sister sentiments, you won’t feel bored at any point of time.
The movie does open with a warning for parental guidance but it doesn't have all that raw blood and gory scenes. At least I don’t see a big difference in terms of violence, from what we see in other films.
Overall, the Hrithik and Sanjay alone carry the movie in their shoulders. But the movie is more like a dead body, where you need 4 people to carry it. 2 is just not enough. What particularly worries me is the manner by which this movie has been shot. The original movie or version 0 as you can call, was shot in early 1990's. And this movie, the version 1, is also based in 1993. I fail to understand the need for this remake after 20 years following the same suit.
A better example could be Don. Don't go till Don 2 i.e., version 2. Just stay with the "Amitabh" Don in 1980's and "SRK" Don in 2010.
The concept was the same, the new version was more suited to the year it released in, with advanced gadgets, technologies, foreign locations, latest cars etc.,
So, there was a meaning for remake. Because you are saying a 1980's story to a guy in 2010 who is of a much different(or rather advanced) generation.in a way that the guy can relate to it.
The new Agneepath has all the old clichés of the old one. Examples - a dying person(either shot or stabbed) speaks sentences of dialogues before dying. And villain beating up the good people and hanging them from trees, the hero after receiving number of bullets and stabs on his body, gets up and bashes the baddy.
As what I see it, the movie would have been a much much better one if the story was set in 2009/2010 with a flashback going into late 1990's, thereby upgrading all crimes and action and avoiding the clichés.
I just see this movie as the same old Agneepath, replacing the artists. My rating is 2.5, just for the performance from the lead actors. Hrithik fans can now boast about one additional hit movie. And so can Sanjay Dutt's fans.
To watch out for: Needless to mention – the chikni chameli song. and also Sanjay Dutt’s body language.
