I have just read 'loverboy's opinion on the current Afghanistan situation and felt duty bound to reply or at least put my thoughts forward.
I must first say that I am in England, white, middle classed, but not to my knowledge in any way racist. I have friends in the Asian community as well as in the Afro-caribbean and other ethnic communities.
It is true that the US Foreign policy may have been wrong many times over the years. But that is absolutely no justification for the horrific acts of September 11th.
ANY RIGHT MINDED PERSON of whatever race, colour, creed, religion etc should be absolutely and catagorically against acts of this kind. FULL STOP - END OF STORY.
No, ifs, no buts, no mitigating circumstances.
If The Taliban or Pakistanis or whoever are sheltering Bin Laden and his hateful anarchists - forget religion , they are ANARCHISTS! - had any sense of civilisation about them they would string the guy up and hand him and his kind over.
BECAUSE HAVE NO DOUBT - HE IS A MADMAN and he would like nothing more to see the whole world torched.
What is beginning to happen at the moment is that Muslims are frightened, they are standing up for themselves and telling the world - It's not us, BUT on the other hand they are NOT denouncing Bin Laden and his kind - that is wrong. That kind of action will unstable the whole world.
I do not believe the bombing of Afghanistan will achieve anything unless it is accompanied by ground troops - probably special services - going in to get the hateful terrorists. The sooner the world is rid of them, then we can get back to more meaningful pursuits which have now begun to be focussed on.
The gradual awakening of the Western world on the plight of the people of Afghanistan and the many hundreds of thousands of refugees, could go towards relieving the situation.
IF THE BOMBING CONTINUES - the war of words continues - the build up of the Islamic faith NOT Comdemning the actions of their own renegades (of which Bin Laden is just one) continues, then no problems are solved. The homeless and hungry will die.
Sorry, it is NOT The West's fault.
It is NOT The USA's fault.
It is the government - or indeed lack of it - in Afghanistan. The Taliban do not CARE about their people. The West cannot negotiate with them, they are fanatics. If the government cared in the slightest about the plight of their people they would not be welcoming with open arms any terrorist that wants safe haven. Its down to money - the rulers of the Taliban are lining their nests while their people starve - then have the nerve to blame the West and expect AID.
Sorry - why is it our problem?
You cannot expect to support and harbour terrorists who deliberately kill 6000 innocent people from many nationalities and faiths....and then expect the civilised world to throw money at you.
But this is what the Taliban want. Meanwhile bin Laden and his killers are hidden from view able to control their teror gangs from their hidden locations - which may well NOT Be in Afghanistan (it could well be not a million miles from the confines of Saddam Hussein in Iraq)
We need to get in - oust the Taliban, restore some kind of order in Afghanistan, encourage people back into their towns and cities and let them live their lives without being in fear of them.
To do that bin Laden and his killers must be sutgically removed - not so he is left as a Martyr to his people.
DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT HE IS DOING TO THE WESTERN VIEW OF ISLAM?
He should be denounced by Islam, rather than as is too often seen , him being deified.
Then maybe we can ALL Sleep safely in our beds at night including the persecuted millions in this trouble torn country - Afghanistan. But remember the root of all this - the Twin Towers atrocity - R.I.P 6000 !!! Lest we not forget
