When U are getting wait listed tickets for any journey, do not worry. One option is to book one child ticket extra, along with Ur own ticket. If the final chart shows RAC for both the tickets, U will be able to get a full berth, with additional 50% fare due to the child ticket. later U can say to TTE that the child did not turn-up, get the same marked on the chart, and apply for TDR / refund for un-traveled child. But I did not do this a few times, as I got the berth for my night journey.
If U have a manual counter booked ticket, just reach some time before the departure, and cancel the child ticket at the counter after chart is prepared, and get full refund'minus' clerical charges of Rs. 20.00, for the Child-RAC ticket.
I tried this a few times, and worked well, for getting the berth.
This is always better than, roaming around the TTE for most of the time, for confirmation of RAC berth, by paying some money to his pocket, out of the way.
