Second opinion helped me save my eyes at AEHI

I have always worn glasses and since I am very active outdoors I always wanted to get rid of glasses. But I was very scared and I had heard risks in laser eye surgery. I had consulted my local eye doctor in Nerul and he had told that I was fit to undergo a Lasik surgery and encouraged me to go ahead with it. I had almost made up my mind and was planning on but something did not feel right about the whole setup.

then I read an article online at times on India website that everyone who wears glasses may not be fit for lasik surgery. It mentioned about a new eye hospital (advanced eye hospital) on palm beach road sanpada, which is very close to my home in Nerul. The article also mentioned the doctors name as Dr Vandana Jain. I was amazed and piqued- why would a Lasik surgeon recommend not doing a lasik surgery. I decided to  go for a second opinion thinking it wont hurt and laos cognizant that how can I trust a new eye doctor.

I was amazed at the infrastructure and cleanliness of the hospital, it was spacious and beautiful and sparkingly clean and the staff looked straight out of a hotel committee. I became even more cautious, thinking oh.. this is a trap.

But while waiting I met up with a young couple who had undergone lasik with some new technique last week and were looking happy. They were sold on the experience at AEHI and were going ga ga over the whole thing. That reassured me. While I waited for my turn (my warning- saturdays run busy at the centre), I met like 4-5 middle aged people like me who had undergone lasik the week before and all were very happy and satidfied. I was ready now...:)

They did a half an hour checkup and then guided me to Dr Vandana Jain's cabin. I was still a little paranoid though the junior staff had done a very thorough checkup and kept my head high and entered Dr Jain's cabin. She looked at the reports and asked - why you want to get a lasik done? I told her that I cant look for my glasses every morning the moment I wake up, that I wanted to be free.

She was very concerned on seeing the reports and showed me one very particular report of some coloured graph called topography. It showed a condition called keratoconus (i hope I got it right) - in which outer part of eye called cornea gets conical. Basically, I was unfit for lasik. In fact when I read about keratoconus on google I realized that keratoconus is often missed by general eye doctors and I would have faced near blindness if I had undergone a lasik eye surgery. Dr Jain recommended some cross linking thing to stop progression of glasses.

I was in a shock for a week and then I looked for her credentials and talked to 5-6 people who had undergone keratoconus treatment with Dr Jain and I finally underwent the procedure ten days later.

I am glad that I could find a doctor who know to say "NO" to a surgery to save someones vision. I am very satisfied with the doctors and thankful to the staff of AEHI.
