Ayirathil Oruthi(van). Review on Aayirathil Oruvan Movie

I happened to get a chance to watch Ayirathil Oruvan preview show in Chennai.

Selvaragavan has tried something very different from the usual stereotype films. The movie reminds slightly of many of the fantasy english movies like Mummy, 300 etc, Apocalypto, Gladiator etc. Coming back to the movie, its about an archoeological group(Andrea, Reema etc) who are about on a mission to find a missing archeologist(pratap pothen) who gets mysteriously lost on a mission to find the missing Chola Civilization.(So many "missings")

The Mission briefing headed by Reema tells the group that this mission is of significance because it is closely monitored by one of the ministers from the government which is revealed why? later in the movie. Security for the group is provided by private force hired by the govt who happened to possess all latest Leo brand toys.

Before the group could get on the boat the group of coolies hired by Reema come just in time. The coolies are headed by Karthick who sports the same characteristics and mannerisms that he left off in his last movie Paruthiveeran.

The Humor potion of the movie starts from this point and goes onto till the First half the movie. Karthick does his job well in trying his best to attract the 2 ladies here but fails at every point. They discard him and call him a scumbag. Reema goes one step ahead and calls him a pu&&y(po&&&i in tamil:(). This pisses off karthick and from then on he starts hating her. But he is attracted to the less spoken Andrea.

In the meantime Andrea forgets to warn the group that the journey requires that they cross 7 different obstacles on the way to the target, which includes Cannibals, Snakes, Quicksand, hunger etc. The group loses most of the members when they come across these dangers.

The CGI is really bizzare which really makes mockery of the concept that the director had planned in his mind. Examples include the scene where Karthick plans to hunt a camel in the desert, also where Electric Fish kills people near the seashore, the galdiator type of fight in the kingdom and the place where snakes come in huge numbers.

Reema fits the bill aptly, she dresses like Lara Croft and starts shooting wheneve she hears gunshots, it goes to the extreme when she starts shooting even snakes near her.

Like all movies here the Security forces stand in a row with guns behind each others back and shoot the enemies whenever they appear not causing any friendly fire hehe. Reema has done her best to oooze a lot of glamour into all the scenes where she comes in. Infact she is the Character which causes the twists and turns in the movie. Sadly Karthick just plays along and has no real scope other than make funny comments.

The trio cross all the hurdles and enter the final obstacle of the deserted village. The archeaologist are so happy to find the lost civilization. Suddenly the place becomes very quiet and casts a creepy feeling in you. Loud voices and noises fill the air and make the trio mad and they try to kill each other. They finally come to the place where the survivors of Chola kingdom still live in. From now on it becomes really bizzare and so confusing you never know what is happening. *This is the place where Parthiban is introduced as the Chola king and his antics are really bizzare.

The rest of the story is whether the Chola king returns back to his lost kingdom or not and what role the trio play from there on that journey back. I do not want to reveal the details and spoil it.

The movie has many Apocalypto kind of head chopping action sequences. It also has many steamy scenes and other'A' rated ones.

If you are planning to go with your Kid I would advice you no. Having said on what to expect and if your partner is light hearted and if you are ready for the gruelling/confusing second half you can watch this movie.

Since Reema plays the bigger part in this movie(Glamour/Role), it should have been named aptly Ayirathil Oruthi:)
