The unusuals

Like all the others who have contributed here have commented, it is practically impossible to select the best five books ever written, thanks to the vast diversity of literature.

I have therefore decided to write of five books that touched my heart, made me sit and read them in a single sitting, and made me think of their contents long after finishing with them. I am leaving aside the ordinary famous books, since everyone knows of them, and will concentrate on the excellent books that I feel have not received the attention they deserve.

To Sir, with Love by ER Braithwaite

This is probably one of the best books I have ever read. It treats an explosive topic like racism with finesse, and highlights the power of love over most other emotions. This is a biographical work, written like a novel, and was the basis of the film starring Sidney Poitier. However, the book covers much more detail than the movie. It tells of the relationship between a black teacher and his white students, and how he won them over and makes for riveting reading. I felt tears prickle my eyes on more than one occasion, and had a lump in my throat on others. Everyone of my friends, to whom I recommended this book, has loved it. I am sure that you will too.

Mr. God, this is Anna by Fynn

'The difference from a person and an angel is easy. Most of the angel is in the inside and most of a person is on the outside' These are the words of Anna, the main protagonist of this work. Is it a biography, or is it a work of highly imaginative fiction? Whatever it is, the views propounded the the six year old Anna will make you sit up and think, and maybe end up making you a better person. If this is philosophy, I wonder why more philosophers could not package their wares similarly- they would have been read by many more people. It is light reading, but if you are imaginative, it is a very heavily loaded work, and hence a definite read for everyone.

Love of seven dolls by Paul Gallico

This is the total antithesis of his better known work, 'Poseidon Adventure'. It tracks the life of a Parisian girl who wanted to commit suicide and of an evil puppeteer who saves her life, and steals her heart. It is a melodramatic story, truly worthy of a Bollywood adaptation! It will put most romances to shame, and is a must read for anyone who treasures the lovely things in life. I think that it will be rated high by 100% of the fairer sex, and at least half the males who read it.

Falklands Whale by Pierre Boulle

The famous author of *'The Bridge on the river Kwai' *scripted an unusual story of the love affair between a blue whale and the seamen of a British warship going to participate in the Falklands war. Another story that raises lumps in the throat and tears in the eyes, this is a great book if you love animals or animal stories.

Surely you are joking Mr. Feynman by Richard Feynman

An unusual autobiography by an unusual man. This Nobel prize winning physicist starts the story from his childhood, and lead us through days at MIT, where he stole another student's door, to the days after he won the Nobel and could not believe it! Weaving humor effortlessly into his prose, he has produced an eminently readable work of the life of a modern day scientist. If you never liked non-fiction, this may change your heart forever!
