Recently, I had a horrible experience with the bengali cuisine restaurant 36 Chowringhee Lane located at Shanthinagar, Bangalore. I had hired their services, prefering them to other bengali food caterers, for a small function at my residence on Jan 28, 2007
The "rui kalia"(a specific preparation made of Rohu fish) - which was the primary attraction in the menu was so bitter that it could not be even licked - important to say that this dish constituted more than 50% of the total cost.
We had specifically ordered one of the "chhana" preparations to be absolutely vegetarian - to cater to the vegetarian guests. To our horror the "veg" preparation smelt of fish! The paneer(chhana) balls seemed to be floating in a curry made for some other non veg dish!
It is on seeing the paneer balls floating in a non veg curry I realised, why the delivery boy was so insistent on taking the full payment on delivery of the meal - even before we got a chance to open the lids of the containers - leave alone taste the food! I am sure no one would have pad a penny for the food that was delivered to us!
We were severely embarassed in front our guests(who in some ways were all family members). I complained to the manager as soon as the guests left. The manager said he would try and see what could have gone wrong and call back. That call never came. The restaurant boys came to collect the utensils the next day and left without a single word of apology. I kept waiting for the manager to come back to us. Its 10 days since Jan 28. I have reasons to believe that the restaurant does not have any intentions to taking such a grave customer issue seriously. This review is to advise all and sundry never to hire them for catering - unless of course you want the teach a "bitter" lesson to the guests you are calling for the meal!
