(TODAY I COMPLETE 2 YEARS ON MS!! I HAVE GAINED A LOT THROUGH MS, ESPECIALLY IN THE PAST 1 YEAR. AND THANKS ALSO TO THE MEMBERS OF THE MS WHO HAS ALWAYS BEEN FRIENDLY AND CO-OPERATIVE!)

Of all the war movies released till now, I must admit that 300 is the best and the finest war movies The visual effects, action scenes, screenplay, direction-everything is terrific and thrilling (and violent too!)

The story of the movie: The year was 480BC. King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) ruled the Sparta city-state. King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) of Persian and also self-proclaimed God, send his Persian Emmisary to Sparta and tells Leonidas to surrender. But Leonidas was a Spartan-the bravest of all. He refuses to surrender, as he felt quite insulted. Leonidas then consults the local oracle that refuses him to fight in that period. Leonidas, then with his 300 bravest men, secretly moves to the Thermopylae passage, to block Xerxes way into Sparta. These 300 men then fight with the huge million Persian army, in their true spirit.

300 is a brave movie-excellently directed and marvelously captured. Each scene has been executed nicely, making it a newly satisfied experience. The most important pro is it uses visual effects and special effects heavily, which makes this movie unforgettable. The scene in the beginning, i.e. Leonidas killing the fox and kicking he Persian Emmisary into the well, sets the mood of the movie. These two scenes give a hint that there is a lot in store.

Each scene, each frame is shot beautifully. There are several scenes, which will be fresh in your mind, even after you come out of the theatre. In my opinion, the best scene was when thousands of arrows are shot at the Spartians and the sunlight gets almost blocked. Another scene that needs special mention-Leonidas killing Persians in the beginning. It is a 45-50 second long and the slow and fast motion used in this scene makes it quite watchable.

Any blemishes? Yes, but only minor! The movies, a fast-paced one, gets too slow at times. That’s it!

Gerard Butler gives a stunning performance. He was made for this role! He looked fierce, brave and fearless and acted confidently throughout the movie. He is an actor to watch! Lena Headey as Queen Corgo also acts quite confidently and looks stunning and beautiful. Vincent Regan as the Captain gives an excellent performance.

Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes gives an amazing performance. His scary look and hoarse voice makes his performance a spine-chilling one. Excellent! Andrew Tiernan as Ephialtes gives a superb performance. Others were also fantastic.

The dialogues were also one of the most important in the movie. The dialogues were brave, inspiring and motivating. Some of the best dialogues in the movie:

  1. “Come back with your shield, or on it”

  2. “This is where we fight! This is where they die!”

  3. “Give them nothing, but take from them everything”

  4. “Spartans, enjoy your breakfast, as tonight we dine in Hell!!”

  5. “Madness? No, This is SPARTA”

Zack Snyder, Kurt Johnstad, Michael Gordon’s screenplay is tight, gripping and excellent. Larry Fong’s cinematography was breathtaking and suited the mood of the movie. Tyler Bates’ background score was perfect. Same for Art Direction.

The four things, which need special mention-sound effects, visual effects, special effects and stunts. These four made the movie a totally spine-chilling and a thrilling one! Sound Effects were horrifying at times, Visual effects made the movie unforgettable (The bluescreen used in this movie was really a creative idea!) Special effects were stupendous. Stunts and action were thrilling and perfect for such a movie.

Zack Snyder’s direction was excellent and perfect. The movie is just of 2 hours and doesn’t let down or bores even for a second. Though it gets slow at times, the movie overall satisfies the viewers completely.

Some best scenes of the movie:

  1. 15-16 year old Leonidas killing the fox

  2. The conversation of Leonidas with Persian emissary

  3. The first war scene of the movie

  4. The scene where thousands of arrows are shot towards Spartans (Best Scene)

  5. Xerxes’ entry

  6. The scene where Ephialtes joins hands with Xerxes

  7. The last 15 minutes of the movie.

On the whole, 300 is an excellent movie. It has enough subsance and drama to make the movie memorable. It would be remembered for years as one of the best war movies of the world. Fantastic!

My rating- 1/2
