I admit that I am not a keen viewer of commercial cinema however sometimes when I see public responses the natural instinct is to view the film and hence I went to watch the movie.

The Indian audience is craving for cinema which provides them something different as well as keeps the Indian thirst for dramatics intact. This one serves them. It is what we call serving the best platter of Indian Cuisine. Chetan Bhagat’s writings have been thrashed out earlier by critics however his book was a mass success here. I asked one acquaintance of what he liked about the book. His response was, this is one complete entertainer. Even a common man who does not have much literary skills would be able to understand it and laugh at the jokes. True! Do not go for the book if you’re looking for intellect quotient however go for it if instead of viewing you want to read a Hindi movie script. This movie is loosly adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s “ Five Point Someone” and Rajkumar Hirani with Abhijat Joshi capture it quite well. The filmmakers picked up a different subject and used the writing of the author who had captured the masses with common lineage.

The story of course revolves around three friends, their triumph to communicate to the world around them of their desires and achieving it. The narrative style by Rajkumar Hirani quite captures the mind and doesn’t allow much loose end holding the script together. Rancho (Aamir Khan) is the protagonist and he shows his two friends Farhan Qureshi ( R Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi ( Sharman Joshi) to follow their dreams and even if it takes to fight the common norms , it would be worth the struggle. Viru Sahastrabudhhe ( Boman Irani) plays the eccentric dean of college representing the rigid mindset of Indians personified. Rancho is an engineering student whose passion is to design machines rather going conventional and thrive to be the best ranker. Farhan wants to be wildlife photographer however joins engineering to fulfill his father’s wishes. Raju wants to use this degree to uplift his family’s financial and social status.

The dean of the college finds Chatur Ramalingam( Omi Vaidya) however has his favorite since he goes by the expectations of the prevalent system.

The story is presented in flashbacks where 10 years after Chatur vowed to avenge his embarrasement with Rancho, gets with Farhan and Raju to travel all the way up Ladakh to find their friend who taught them how to live the life on their own terms. The cinematography by C.K. Muraleedharan is commendable and the editing of the film was high scoring point jointly done by Rajneet Bahadur and Rajkumar Hirani. Screenplay goes perfect with the settings and dialogues give it a high scorer. The music by Shantanu Moitra is good however not the biggest plus point of the film.

The film does have originality as some of the inventions shown in the film were invented by Indians like Remya Jose ( exercise bicycle come washing machine) , Mohammad Idris ( bicycle powered horse clipper ) and Jahangir Painter ( Scooter powered flour mill). Overall the movie achieves to capture the audience and pass on the message in a simple manner which doesn’t require an intellective ability.

Hence if you’re fond of Chetan Bhagat then you would love this movie, if you want entertainment of commercial cinema, this movie offers enough to catch the eye. And for the audience who want Indian cinema to revolve more around story this movie of course comes like a breath of fresh air.
