An absolutely superb movie. A must watch for both parents, their children and teachers. In India where the schools give more importance to mugging up lessons and aiming to get high percentage..97% & above, this movie comes as a breath of fresh air.

The premise of this movie is and I quote "not to run behind success but to strive for excellence and success will follow". In India most parents want their children to be either doctors or engineers. Though the scene is changing a bit now and other fields of education are coming up, the mentality is still to push your children towards high profile/ high paying jobs.

Most of the times the children don't even have a say in the choice.Mr.Rajkumar Hirani, the director of this movie, had brought all these issues to the forefront and has made us think about the merits of such an  education system and our mindset. That too without preaching, in a wholly tongue firmly in cheek manner.

The 3 idiots Rancho, Farhan and Raju join the Imperial College of Engineering and befriend each other. Farhan because his parents dream of making him an engineer, Raju as he wants to graduate and get a job that pays well so that his poverty stricken family can see better times.

Rancho is the only one who comes to the college with the goal to learn something new. To better himself, to come up with new ideas. Unfortunately for him the Principal Viru Sahastrabuddhe (ably played by Boman Irani) is of the old school. For him rank is everything. Pupils must get good grades, whether they learn anything is immaterial.

And so begins the clash between the Principal and the 3 Idiots.Ofcourse, there has to be a student who is a specialist in mugging up lessons, full of self importance about standing first in class and a tale teller. This character Chatur is ably played by Omi.

The ragging scene was hilarious. If that was only hilarious the scene where Chatur gives a speech was enough to bring the house down. Kareena Kapoor had a minuscule role but was good nonetheless. The actors selected for each role are absolutely apt. Though making Amir Khan play a 20yr old was a bit far fetched.

Though he has the body language of a teenager the built is not right and age does show on his face. But then again I don't see Shahrukh Khan or Salman Khan being in the lead. So I guess Amir was a good choice. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi too are good and hold their own against Amir.  Infact I absolutely loved Sharman in the Kareena wedding scene, his comic timing is perfect. Madhavan is endearing. The surprise package being Omi.

This was the first time I saw this actor and he made his presence felt. The only dragged out scene was the "delivery scene". Though it did have it's own humour and poignancy, it was a bit farfetched especially the "al iz well" bit. But hey we are Indians and we do love miracles so why not. :) The cinematography is good. Especially Ladakh, Manali. Shows the beauty of the mountains and the twisting routes. The music score by Shantanu Moitra is good.

Foot tapping and "hummable". I guess the tracks become chartbusters only if they can be retained by the movie going public and can be hummed by a tone deaf person. These are much much more than what is churned out as music these days.So GO and WATCH this movie with your family and friends!

It's message of" follow your heart and you'll be happy" really makes sense in this day and age when student suicides are high. Anyways just go and enjoy the movie.   Take a bow Mr.Hirani for making this film. The timing is right too. Just before the board exams... enough time for the parents to rethink and change their mindset and help their children grow into happy adults and not frustrated people who regret their whole life on their retirement.
