I have been waiting for one year for this movie, knowing right from the beginning there was a winner coming on Christmas Eve. And I wasn’t disappointed. A movie which is directed by Rajkumar Hirani(of Munnabhai) and has Aamir Khan in the lead, has to be excellent. My only concern was – can 2 good men spoil a movie by any chance, instead of improving it? Mercifully, my fear was unfounded.
The story is about 2 friends, Farhan and Raju who are looking for their third friend Ranchhod(Rancho), who was with them in college, and subsequently disappeared. Mostly in flashback, returning back to the present every now and then for short spurts, this is an absolutely brilliant, incredibly funny and fast-paced movie with a sincere message.
Rancho has a unique outlook to life. He doesn’t believe one should come to college to study and cram his way to high marks, a good degree, a well-paying job and find “success”. Find your passion, follow it and you can be happy – he believes. He never takes his studies seriously, though he still comes out top every time. His friends are usually towards the bottom, because one of them has a different passion which he doesn’t admit to himself, and the other one relies far too heavily on the Almighty and the various rings he wears on his fingers, and far too little on himself.
The script is utterly brilliant, keeping the audience laughing throughout the movie. The message of the movie is also passed on to us every now and then, and very convincingly. And it is to the credit of the extremely talented director, that he is able to merge comedy and the message seamlessly throughout the movie, without losing pace.
Every actor has acted very well, be it Sharman Joshi, Madhavan, Kareena Kapoor or Umi(who plays Chatur, a crammer who is always vying for the highest marks, and epitomises all that the movie is preaching against). Boman Irani yet again has done a brilliant performance as the professor who believes that “life is a race – win it or get trampled”. And Aamir Khan has of course done full justice to his role, keeping us entertained and engaged throughout the movie. His is a dazzling performance, and after this, I wonder why any other star can even think of coming close to this guy.
After watching the mindless comedies of the recent past like De Dana Dan, All The Best and Do Knot Disturb(was the last movie even funny?), I had forgotten that movies can be high quality and yet funny. This movie is a must-see for everyone, of all ages – for the story, for the humour and for complete wholesome entertainment. Easily the best movie of the year. The makers of the movie are surely targeting the Oscars in this movie – read the English sub-titles which come with the movie if you get a chance. Very often, I found the sub-titles funnier than the Hindi lines in the movie – believe it or not!
Flaws? Well, I found some. For example, they showed some good looking girls in an engineering college, which I think is fiction:) Plus a scene where Rancho is asked by "Virus" to lecture in the class, which is hard to believe, and the professor's limited reaction to Rancho's behaviour. And the job interview of Sharman - there seems to be no reason why he should be given the job.
