3 Deewarein - Imprisons its viewers. Review on 3 Deewarein

After having tried three light hearted comedies like Hyderabad Blues, Rockford and Bollywood Calling Nagesh Kukunoor has now tried and has been successful in making a serious and gripping film. Though I was bit hesitant to watch the movie as I was doubtful how Nagesh Kukunoor handles a serious movie, but after having seen 3 Deewarein I applaud the efforts of Nagesh.

3 Deewarein is so gripping that it keeps the viewers glued to the seats till the end.

Plot:

3 Deewarein opens with Jaggu (a lawyer and Poetry writer) murdering his wife by stabbing and Nagya's (an Accountant) wife getting killed by falling in front of a moving vehicle where Nagya is framed for her murder.

Both Jaggu and Nagya are imprisoned at Musheerabad Central Prison which is under the supervision of Jailor Mohan. Mohan is of the view of giving maximum freedom to its prisoners, treating them as human being and trying to show them the right path. In jail Jaggu keeps himself busy by cooking for inmates penning and reciting english poems to Nagya. Jaggu feels he should not try to get a pardon for the murder committed by him.

Nagya is of the opinion that he is innocent and he is sure that one day he can prove his innocence and get freed. Nagya, though he does not understand the verse written by Jaggu he enjoys the company of Jaggu.

One more convict Ishan is brought in the prison he is accused of murdering a bank employee while robbing a bank. Ishan is a convict who is well known for escaping from prisons.

Gradually Jaggu, Nagya and Ishan becomes friends. Now enters Chandrika who is a film maker she with her team comes to the prison to make a documentary film on the life of prisoners and to know the procedure adopted by Jailor Mohan to reform the prisoners.

Chandrika is going through troubled marriage, her husband is abusive and alcoholic. During the course of filming a Chief Justice meets Chandrika and asks her to get the confession of Nagya whereby he can be sentenced to death as he has murdered the Justice's daughter. In return for this favour the Justice assures her that he will help her to get freed from her troubled married life. Chandrika does not comply to the offer as she feels that Nagya is innocent and wrongly framed.

The scene where Chandrika speaks to the three convicts about their crime, whether they have really done what they have been accused for, whether in any way they repent for their action, this is one of the best scenes of the movie.

Nagya keeps repeating that he is innocent as he had tried to save his wife when she came before the running vehicle. Jaggu keeps repeating that he deserves death for the crime committed by him as he had killed his wife whom he had loved the most, as he knew she was ditching him. Ishan keeps on repeating that he had never had an intention to murder the bank employee it was just because of an accident that the trigger got pressed and employee shot dead.

What Nagya, Jaggu and Ishan are telling is it true have they really not murdered the respective victims ? Are they innocent, if so who has murdered the victims ? What is the bond or relation between the three is the plot of 3 Deewarein ?

The fine thread of relation between the three convicts shown at the end of the movie is just spellbinding. The climax of the movie has been made in an unimaginable way. Hats off to the screenplay of Nagesh Kukunoor.

Performance-wise each and every character has done their best, but the person who has stolen the show is Naseeruddin Shah. The emotion and expression portrayed by him are marvellous.

Though 3 Deewarein is a songless movie the music by Salim-Suleiman has been well blended with the movie. Cinematography of Ajay Vincent is remarkable. Especially the flash back scenes where the murder is shown is black and white is though not new but a novel experience.

Sanjib Datta has played a great role of a perfect editor in such a movie.

Direction and Screenplay of Nagesh Kukunoor is so brilliant that for 120 minutes he has imprisoned all its viewers.

Plus Point of the movie is the scene where Chandrika speaks to the convicts and its climax which is full of unexpected twist and turns. Nagesh has also proved that for a movie to be good it is not essential that it has to be shot in foreign locations and it should be a big budgeted movie.
