So, if push came to shove, and the world was about to end; what is the one place you would go? Well an aeroplane would be a good place. A couple of large boats won’t hurt either. if you are wondering where I am going with this line of conversation, the answer is simple: I just saw the latest ‘The world is coming to an end, run!’ flick. Titled 2012(after the date of the predicted apocalypse by the Mayans), 2012 is a fast paced movie that does not let the tempo drop.
The movie might not have big Hollywood stars, but it does have some awe inspiring visuals of destruction and a very slick story line. If you are looking for a movie that can truly portray the awesome power of nature, then 2012 is a good place to start. The movie does not spare the usual clichés, but that is not always a bad thing either. Despite the dark nature of the movie, there are a few light scenes. Having seen my fair share of ‘end of the world movies’ like Armageddon, Deep Impact, The Core and The Day After Tomorrow, I found 2012 in a similar mould.
Unfortunately, the movie does have a few things that don’t quite add to its value. The CGI effects are impressive, but far from earth shattering. The actors have done a good job, but their lines are far from snappy. What makes the clichés in the movie annoying is the almost precision placement of scenes, from the initial running around to the tear jerking goodbyes. For once, I would have liked to see a movie where the true nature of humanity was exposed the good and the bad.
The director has used a wide variety of geographic locations to depict the truly global scale of events, but a major part of the movie is still centred around the US and surprisingly CHINA. In a nutshell, if you are looking for a movie that will blow your mind: 2012 will do so only in a few places. If you are looking for a movie that keep you on the edge of your seat: 2012 will do so in a few places. As always no revealing the plot.
