Someone said * “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” * and who else but Kishore Kumar to give me my daily dose of music.

Kishore Kumar, the name that all music lovers are familiar with, was a man who gave us some of the most beautiful gems of Hindi music. His singing career started at the young age of 18, when he sang for the movie called *Ziddi. *  But fame didn’t come to him easily and he was criticized for singing in K.L. Saigal’s style. This did not deter Kishore Da and over time, he developed his own distinctive style of singing that became a rage. Today, Kishore Da is a legend and his name is synonymous with the yodeling he started in the world of music.

Today I shall try to pick out my favorite numbers from the thousands of songs this versatile singer has left behind him.

~Roop Tera Mastana(1969)~

This is a beautiful song from the movie Aradhana  picturized on Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tahore. Kishore Da created magic with this song and it went on to become a song synonymous with seduction.

~Aap ke anuroodh pe(1977)~

Beautiful lyrics is the primary feature of this song along with soulful music from Laxmikant Pyeralal. Kishore da’s superb control over his voice makes it is pleasure to listen to.

~Dil Aaj Shayar Hai(1971)~

Picturized on the evergreen Dev Anand in the movie Gambler, this song is about lost love. Kishore da has excelled himself in this heart wrenching song penned by Neeraj.

~ Gata Rahe Mera Dil(1965)~

A romantic duet from the classic movie Guide  picturized on the beautiful Waheeda Rahman and Dev Anand, this song has Lata ji singing along with Kishore Da. It is a fun-filled romantic song for all seasons.

~ Mere Bheege Bheege se(1973)~

A sad and moving song from *Anamika * which portrays the anguish of betrayal. The pain, the sorrow has been wonderfully rendered by Kishore Da.

~ Aaye tum yaad mujhe(1975)~

This is a sad romantic song from *Mili * where Kishore Da has beautifully brought out the feelings of a lover who has been separated from his beloved and is singing in her memory.

~Pal pal dil ke paas(1973)~

This is a song from the movie *Blackmail * and has beautiful lyrics by Rajendar Krishan. Just the perfect song to tell your sweetheart how much you love her.

~ Humei Tum Se Pyaar Kitana(1981)~

A romantic number from the movie Kudrat, this song has brilliant music by R.D. Burman. It is song that speaks of immeasurable and timeless love.

~ O Mere Dil Ke Chain(1972)~

I don’t know how to describe this song – I think it is one of those everlasting love songs that all generations will love to hear.

~ Khilte Hai Gul Yaha(1971)~

An amazing song from *Sharmili * that non other than Kishore Da could do justice to. Sung with just the right emotions, this song never fails to refresh me.

~ Phir Wohi Raat Hai(1978)~

Lyrics that touch the soul and melody that haunts you. This is a gem by Gulzar and RD Burman from the movie Ghar  which has been brought to life by Kishore Da.

~ Anewala pal janewala hai(1979)~

A thought provoking sing from the hilarious movie *Golmal * which tells us that time doesn’t stop and it is up to us to make the most of it - magnificently rendered by Kishore Da.

~ Phoolo ke rang se(1970)~

Sing this song for your beloved and watch her fall on love with you once again. Picturised on Dev Anand, this is a brilliant song from the movie *Prem Pujari.

~ Kehna Hai(1968)~

Sweet and romantic is how I describe this song from *Padosan. * It is a song that confesses that life has become more beautiful because of love.

~ Mere dil me aaj Kiya hai(1973)~

Want to say those magic words but courage fails you, just pass on this song and your message will get right across. This melodious song is from the movie Daag  and Kishore Da has done full justice to the wonderful music of Lakshmikant Pyerelal.

~ Pyaar Dewana Hota Hai(1970)~

Love is untouched by pain or joy is what this song is all about. A wonderful creation by RD Burman from the movie *Kati Patang.

~ Chalte Chalte(1974)~

Title track of the movie Chalte Chalte, this song has two versions and both are equally good. I don’t think that I can ever get tired of listening to this song – fantastic is the word to describe this song.

~ Mere Mehboob Kayamat(1964)~

This touching song has been picturized on Kishore Da himself and he sings his heart out in this lovely song from *Mr X in Bombay.

~ Kuch to log kahenge(1971)~

This is one of those songs that linger on in memory long after you have heard it. Anand Bakshi’s lyrics take this song to an entirely different level. A classic from the movie Amar Prem.

~ Woh Shaam kuch ajeeb thi(1969)~

Haunting melody by Hemant Kumar, touching lyrics by Gulzar and the magical voice of Kishore Da – what else does a song need? This is one of my most favorite songs from Khamoshi.

To end, I’d like to quote Maya Angelou who said “Music was my refuge. I could crawl between the notes and curl my back to loneliness”. I hope you enjoyed my selection of Kishore Da’s gems.

Happy Listening!
