It’s really not easy to mold the contents of a book into a 2.5 hours romantic drama. It’s the directors most difficult challenge to look for not only the characters in the book but to have some similarity with their nature also.
2 States, movie adapted from the renowned writer Chetan bhagat’s own marriage story masterpiece.
First of all, kudos to Abhishek Kapoor for showcasing the wonderful love story casting with Arjun Kapoor( Krrish) and Aalia Bhatt ( Ananny). The screenplay, the direction is done perfectly well with the script just as he did with Kai Po Che. This is the third movie which is being adapted from Chetan bhagat’s bookstore.
First being 3 idiots and second, Kai Po Che. 3 Idiots, storywise was very simple. However, it was the humor which kept the audience keep holding till the end. Humor in the storylines always works. Kai po che didnt had humour, but still stuck well in the box office.
Sushant singh was the show stopper and his role was wonderfully portrayed on the screen. Now coming back to 2 states. When comparing with the original book, it had plenty of humor and pick up lines that you still remember. However, the movie fails to deliver the humor it had and just stick itself to the dramatic way of storytelling. These 2 hrs 25 mins of long drama didn’t justify as why people would watch this movie even if the book is available in the market. Missing humor, catchphrases, pickup lines are surely going to be the cons for this movie.
Aalia bhatt as Southie Anannya, fits perfectly well with the character.
At some point of time, you will realize that she really looks like a Tamilian. She is cute, quick, confident & witty with dialogues. Arjun Kapoor, he had got the best role in the movie but he really lacks in many places while playing his role. First of all, his expression is common in every situation. Be it an emotional scene, a romantic scene. He even has the same expression in all the songs he played into.
Abhishek kapoor should have had a second thought about the lead role. The dialogues provided to Arjun too were lacking energy and excitement or emotional touch. He could be the second reason why this movie will not work so well in the box office. Amrita rao & Revathy is charming. Ronit Roy is superb; he can be the primary reason why you should go for this movie.
He hasn't got the much place in the screenplay but whatever he had in the script was delivered to the mark. This guy has damn good versatility in acting. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music syncs well with the screenplay. Couple of tunes will leave their mark in your mind. 2 states is one time watchable but misses the magic of Chetan Bhagat’s novel. My rating 2.5 outta 5
