one India, divided states & its story

Two states

It is my first review on any book on MS and frankly saying this is also the first English novel I have read in my life, so I may not be able to write a good review here by comparing it to different portion, still trying my best.

Story of Chetan bhagat fourth novel, ‘2 states’ is a story of Indian society where he have tried to show the limitation of current Indian society and I suppose it may raise some issue and mis-thoughts among concerned people, but what all I want to say is that it is reality which everyone has to accept

Story:-

Krish from Punjab and Ananya from Chennai, both meet each other in IIMA hostel. Krish, engineer from Delhi iit, only one son of family enriched with various house hold conflicts and quarrel on every moment since last 20 years, while Ananya, university topper in economics, a beautiful girl where writer terms Ananya as beautiful above average. She had attracted attention of many student since her arrival as fresh batch student in IIMA. From the first meet in mess, both krish and Ananya got familiar to each other. Though Ananya wanted relation as ‘just friend’, but they happened to be trapped in each other’s love in no time. Till they get Mba and job placed, they had spend lots of moment together where they decide of getting married with permission of parents. But this is where the real drama starts.

In the convocation ceremony of their graduation from B-school, Ananya’s parents are badly frightened on krish mother and vice-versa.  Because of being of different states, their parents feeling are standard of living doesn’t matches with each other. Their parents are established in their own culture, their own pride and their own ethnicity. After reaching home, both side parents want their children to marry with own cast people. But infinite familiarity between two lover’s makes them determined that they will try convincing each other parents from all the best.

On this way, krish chooses the branch option of Citibank as his job on Chennai and goes there thinking to convince Ananya’s parents. He faces lots of problems and hectic in the Tamil society and Ananya’s family. So the story is all about this. Can he be able to convenience Ananya’s family? Will krish family accept Ananya? Will their get love succeed? To know more, you better read this book.

Characters:-

Writer has described story dividing into five parts according to place he has settled

The main character of story is krish where he is himself a narrator. Ananya, his love is well described as best in every aspect. Story is all about their love and convincing the parents.

it looks like writer has presented the character either with detailed study of two different society or he has himself experienced the moments, but while writing he has supported more about Punjabi family.

Time-generation

Talking about the generation of time which had happened in ‘2 stages’, Writer shows different stages which says that it is the story of before decade. The reduced rate of night call std, calling home phone from std telephone boot, recent arrival of mobile phone, just launched of Microsoft office and there are many others too.

While reading the book:

This Book is of 269 pages. In different 5 Act of reading this book, I have found story enjoyable to read. To read it completely, it took not more than 36 hour after I bought on Saturday. Among the 5 different acts, the longest act is in Chennai, where krish is there to convenience Ananya’s parents. Writer also writes inner expression of Krish (which he talks with his own mind) which is the one of the important part of the story. While his residing in Chennai, he compares Tamil people with many physical features found in Chennai. His compare and direct pinch may feel people get hurt, but this is the current Indian society which he wants to show and it needs improvement.

Book relation with society

As I said above, novel might be the story of two lovers, but writer himself has clearly shown the current status of Indian society. Each other society has been compared from their own selfish view. There are superlative in their own view and the other society has been dominated. The society means people of two states.

Krish family is ignoring Ananya as their ‘bahu’ because Ananya is from the ‘black skin society’. krish mother wants her son to marry Punjabi girl because she is desiring large amount of dowry from girl’s family. She wants her own custom and her own tradition to be continued in her own house. Matter of prestige among her relation is one of the main cause in which she don’t want to lose.

Ananya family is ignoring krish because they also want their own customs to be fulfilled and practiced in their society. They think themselves as highly educated and understanding society where they think their society prestige as more important than Ananya’s happiness.

More ever in his stay of Chennai, krish in his own thoughts compares Chennai people with many physical properties. He is not habitant of food of Chennai. So because of not being used to those conditions, he has very different comment for every new thing he gets there. From Tamil actors to Tamil food and Tamil dress up, krish shows up pinching view. These types of writing may bring this book ignored in some part of Indian society, but I support his every of words. Because he is showing a real image of society where one are abused in the place of others.

What he wrote there, it is normally what people of one state thinks about other, and this is the place where Indian society has to be improved. Writer has shown the realistic discrimination which occurs in Indian society where one state people thinks other state people as people of different world. He has shown the culture of dowry, high-expense of marriage and traditional concept which he thinks there is need of change.

My view:-

Although I had enjoyed reading the story, but what I felt is that the story which he wants to show to society is still unsolved problem in Indian society. I would have been much happier if he had shown the story as current date society and I would have been much happier if he had changed his location of story from IIT and IIM to any simple college or on any other way. Because mostly the lower level people are being affected of this differences.

It was a very best example of showing two states, he is sharing the lesson to people that one has to be introduced as Indian not according to their region or religion.

I never felt bore while reading this book, and I think you people will also enjoy it. This is with simple words and vast meaning to current society.

All the best
