It was the perfect end. The best way to go. In a blaze of glory.

To create a memorable work and then take the final curtain call - it couldnt have been any other way. Mr. Rahul Dev Burman ended his innings on the highest possible note. And... left behind a legacy that will survive for many years to come...

When melody rules...

----------------------------------------------------------------

The movie's ambience, is that of pre-independence India. In those war stricken times, we get to experience the seeds of love blossoming into something beautiful and strong. It was a delicately crafted film with very good production values. Vidhu Vinod Chopra's keen eye for quality is evident in every aspect of the movie.

1942 - a love story was a period movie which emphasized on the power of love in troubled times...

...and it provided the right platform for the maestro called R.D. Burman to showcase his abilities. He hit the right chords and wove in a heady dash of melody to create a masterpiece. He was ably supported by the pen of Javed Akhtar and some wonderful singers.

Slip the CD in and experience....

----------------------------------------------------------------

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha - the quintessential song of romantic infatuation and the poetry it conjures within a soul. Javed Akhtar must have been in some mood to conjure out those lyrics - ''jaise khilta gulab jaise shayar ka khwab jaise ujli kiran jaise van mein hiran... mandir mein ho ek... jalta diyaaaa''. R.D. Burman's orchestration is subtle and pleasing. Kumar Sanu sung this song like a winner.

Kuch Na Kaho - another song that hit legendary status. Sung in both male and female versions with Kumar Sanu and Lata Mangeshkar rendering respective versions. ''samay ka ye pal... tham sa gaya hai... aur is pal mein... koi nahin hai... bas ek mein hoon... bus ek tum ho''. Javed Akhtar does it again. Nothing like great lyrics to add more value to great melodies.

Kavita Krishnamurthy sings Pyar Hua... chupke se in her beautiful voice. Another wispy love song thats lighter than a feather. Again, Mr. Akhtar pens some beautiful words (wonder what this man had... bartender... i'll have some of that stuff).

''kyon naye lag rahe hai ye dharti gagan... mai na poocha to boli ye pagli pawan... pyar hua... chupke se...''

Then comes the rain song Rim Jhim Rim Jhim sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Kumar Sanu. Another great track.

Kumar Sanu dons his playful cap and sings the peppy Rooth Na Jaana. Tum ye jano ya na jano... tum ye mano ya na mano... mere jaisa deewana...

Finally theres the track by Shivaji Chatopadyay called Yeh Safar. It does well to add another dimension to this incredible album.

The Fruits of Love's Labour

----------------------------------------------------------------

That year, Kumar Sanu won the best male vocalist Filmfare award, Kavita Krishnamurthy took the female vocalist and the brilliant Javed Akhtar claimed the Lyricist honours.

The legendary music director won it too... for his final creation...

No Encore...

----------------------------------------------------------------

The man is no more but this work of his ranks right up there with the best of hindi movie music. Mr. Burman, thank you for the great music...

~finis~

PS: Thanks everyone... for leaving this untouched. It gave me a chance to pay tribute to a legend.
