As the times go by computing prowess grows by leaps and bounds. There were days when a computer used to occupy a full room and nowadays computers fit into palm of the hand. A 40 GB harddisk space today is much cheaper than what 1 GB was 5 years back. So in computer age a high processing capability doesn't necessary mean high costs too.
Any decision is not taken in isolation. When making a choice between 128 and 56 K modem the choice should be base don NEED . If the need is to browse the net for leisure or check emails then perhaps 56 k is sufficient. However if the need is official work, downloading data/audio/video then perhaps 128K modem is required.
Current standard modem in use is 56k and is just sufficient for normal browsing and emailing. However if you are planning to go for a new computer and if cost differential is not too high than 128 K might be good. However final decision should be based on NEED.
