I occasionally read books that others have recommended but I have to know what the other person likes. Too often I have started books that people tell me are absolutely brilliant. Amsterdam is the winner of The Booker Prize. It is a little, neutral looking sticker album. It tells the bank acc...Read More

Great book... must read

This book is really good. The author had done really good job to present this great book in front of us. This book also won the Booker's award in 1998. The narration of the book is really good, and I personally like the relationship between editor and composer.

A good story about friendship

Intellectual yet so close to life

Aug 30, 2016 04:22 PM Read

I was amazed by how intellectual this book was, being frank! Most of my friends didn't opt for this as a good read as it was using a different style and was pretty much like I said, intellectual for ones taste. It's an excellent read, but not better than his previous book Atonement. It has a dif...Read More

Great thriller

It is difficult to categorize this book. I picked this up as I had read Atonement by Ian McEwan and thought this would be another thriller, I was not disappointed, yet I also feel that this is a searing examination of the morals of our times, the general social structure, the relationship betwee...Read More

Great novel

This was a brilliant read, the second Ian McEwan novel I have read. I am tantalised by his dexterity as a writer, his ability to write in a completely different style from that employed in Atonement. This was utterly gripping. I read this as I am going to be leading discussion on this in the boo...Read More

It isn't the lesson plans that I read, but this is what goodred posted. Thoroughly British with black humor, Amsterdam isn't exactly what I was expecting. With the exception of the last few pages, the story takes place in London. Both vernon, the newspaper editor, and clive, the composer/musicia...Read More

Wonderful book by wonderful writer

Nov 28, 2016 01:04 PM Read (via Mobile)

The novel was well-received by critics. In The New York Times, critic Michiko Kakutani called Amsterdam "a dark tour de force, a morality fable, disguised as a psychological thriller."[2] In The Guardian, Nicholas Lezard wrote, "Slice him where you like, Ian McEwan is a damned good writer" and d...Read More
