Fake review. You never had a 'free account'; Fastmail didn't have 'free' accounts, they had trial accounts whose purpose was to allow you to decide if you want a proper account. The name of the trial account (Guest) was a major clue as to its nature. Due to people abusing the Guest account as... a 'free' account, it has long since been withdrawn.Read More

...but your review is now out of date; the only feature Hotmail still has is its amazing spam protection, in the form of a mailbox so tiny, all your spam (along with everything else) will soon start bouncing back! Just about any other e-mail account is miles better...

...although, AFAIK, it *is* the only one to be mis-categorised on this site as an e-mail 'client', instead of the e-mail service which it actually is! :-) Go to http://www.emaildiscussions.com (especially their forum), you'll find plenty of other services, including some far better ones... BTW..., although the SMS option may indeed have existed in the Hotmail of a year ago (as I write), I think it's one of the many former features to be removed, making the first comment out of date...Read More

If you get a free fastmail.fm account, you can retrieve your Hotmail account contents into that, and then download them into any e-mail client which supports IMAP (which, BTW, is a far better protocol than the antiquated POP3). However, if you get a fastmail.fm account, you'll probably end up swi...tching to that anyway... :-)Read More

I quite like the 'Chunky' version as well! I loved the Dark, Orange and Mint versions -- pity that those were limited editions whose run has now finished... :-(

And in case anyone's still wondering about the relative merits of FastMail.FM vs. MailService.MS: FastMail.FM is still going strong, still regarded as a very good and highly professional outfit (not only on EMD either, but by such prestigious sources as the London _Sunday Times_), and has launche...d its co-branding service! MoreSpammers.MS, on the other hand, has crashed and burned -- taking all its e-mail accounts, and its customers' money, with it... So, which one 'sucks' now? :p (Edit, 11/Feb/2003, 21:08 UTC: It looks as if mailservice.ms has been rescued from the grave — and one rumour is that the new owner is — fastmail.fm! In the light of Lentini's 'review', it would be deeply ironic if that happens...)Read More

What has been said about Hotmail in some of the reviews here (especially for FastMail.FM), plus the fact that Hotmail is listed here in the wrong category to start with (it's an e-mail service, not an e-mail client), proves what e-mail experts have been saying for years; not only is it positivel...Read more

(in reply to jennycolondres) Firstly,as I already said, *all* e-mail providers restrict bandwidth, one way or another — the difference is, FastMail are open and honest about it... And no wonder that you 'think all these reviews are utter crap' when you can't even tell the difference betw...een an e-mail client and an e-mail account (and it's Pegasus *Mail*, not 'Pegasus'), although you do by chance get one thing right — it's IMAP that's better than POP, not the other way around... It's your 'reviews' (and Lentini's) that are the utmost crap of all — at least the rest of us have some idea of what we're talking about...Read More

Appropriate that this review is titled 'Lord of the Rings', since the eponymous character (Sauron) of Tolkien's epic is the bad guy! :) And so it is with Hotmail, which one can't even access with an e-mail client of one's choice (unless one is a masochist and hence chooses MS clients and their we...ll-known dangerous security holes)... And as for all the spam a Hotmail account attracts, like iron flies to a honey-coated magnet!... Forget it — go for Fastmail.FM instead...Read More

... In claiming that 'mailservice.ms is it', Lentini unfortunately dropped the 'sh' from the front of the last word. :) This service is the one banned from the highly respected emailaddresses.com site for copyright theft (a criminal offence here in the European Union, and (so I'm told) in the res...t of the civilised world as well); hardly a basis on which to be 'recommended'...Read More

'I checked the forum on emaildiscussions.com. The moderator of the forum on Fastmail.fm is Jeremy Howard who works for fastmail.fm. So he CAN delete the mails which are offensive to fastmail.fm.' Pity you didn't check a bit more carefully; if you did, you'd see that Jeremy is NOT a moderator for ...the FastMail or RunBox forums. Nor can 'anyone' create a forum at EMD, nor make themselves (or anyone else) a mod; only Edwin (EMD's Administrator) has those two privileges... You might want to read this thread: http://www.emailaddresses.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9247 (pity there's no way I know of to make a clickable link here; remember to reunite that link into one line, in Notepad or whatever, before using it...) And BTW, if you hang around on EMD for very long you'll find that Jeremy is very helpful, even sometimes recommending rival services... :)Read More

(Continued from previous comment.) 'Fastmail also have a forum, which they use as an advertising tool, and to slang[sic] mud on Hotmail and Yahoo in an attempt to entice them with their fabrication[sic] by telling that they are better.'  Firstly, the Fastmail forum is *independant* of Fastma...il, as I said in my review, so if they made any attempt to 'use it as an advertising tool' it (and they) would get booted off emaildiscussions.com pretty fast.  Secondly, since just about any other e-mail service is better than Yahoo or Hotmail (and it's not just FM users who say so, as a search of emaildiscussions.com will soon confirm), saying so is not a 'fabrication' according to any definition of that word which I've seen. 'If anyone makes a post about a better service then they are banned' — ah, now we come to the *real* motive behind Lentini's review; the *truth* is that only *five* services have been banned, four for spamming (one in a particularly fraudulent way) and one for copyright breach (which is a crime) — neither of which activities is what I'd call the mark of a 'better' service; and the *only* users to be banned for 'post[ing] about a [...] service' are those who've tried to defy the ban on posting about these few services (only five, out of hundreds which it is legitemate to talk about).  Thus, Lentini is clearly a representative of one of these banned services, attempting to do to Fastmail what s/he falsely accuses Fastmail of doing — in other words, Lentini is a spammer; someone who, by definition, always lies... And s/he says 'Customer service: Terrible', which is a final lie... Read More

'Hotmail has nearly all the features for of Fastmail for free'. Like what, for instance? It doesn't have things such as the Notepad or the sophisticated filtering... 'Hotmail’s offline access is much better than IMAP too.' Alright then, tell me how to access my Hotmail accounts using Pega...sus Mail... 'With a Fastmail free account you can’t send messages with IMAP.' This is a clear indication that Lentini doesn't know what s/he's talking about — one sends messages using SMTP, not IMAP... (And *of course* the SMTP server isn't available to free users — otherwise there would be tons of spammers signing up to use it; besides, there has to be *some* value to offer those who pay...) 'Hotmail provides this [SMTP] for free too.' No they don't — they offer sending from the webmail interface, which Fastmail also offers for free... 'Fastmail also restricts the amount of message with attachments that you can get with some bandwidth limit.' As does every other provider, one way or another — but Fastmail is the only one I know of which is honest and upfront about this... 'You have to pay even for spam filtering.'  I don't... 'I remember trying out Fastmail once and it had very frequent downtimes and was very unreliable too unlike Hotmail.' That sounds almost exactly right, except that 'Fastmail' should read 'Hotmail' and vice-versa... (continues below due to length limit)Read More
