I can't say I agree with you. I think seventeen is a better magazine than most magazine's out there. Especially for girls aged 15-18. You kinda grow out of seventeen post that.
If you take into consideration what sort of a target group they have, their content is pretty much around that. If they ta...lk about safe sex, I really don't think there's anything wrong in that. After all, no amount of awareness is enough. I remember reading a few things myself that I didn't know about back then in school, stuff like what infections you can get, how to know etc.
I think they play pretty safe and cover topics which are aimed at positive ideas. You'll never see them trying to sell a Louis Vuitton to kids. I'd pick a seventeen out of a choice of cosmo, elle etc anyday.
It doesn't cost me 100 bucks, and it doesn't tell me to go out there and spend. If anything, seventeen tries to bring out the creativity in teens, asking them to go ahead, paint their shoes, do up their rooms etc.
And as far as advertising goes, that what makes media work. A magazine earns primarily from its advertising revenue than its readers as it puts that money back in for distribution and expansion.
