It reminds me of a similar harrowing experience which I underwent with Airtel for a postpaid connection in Delhi NCR circle back in 2009. I approached an Airtel Customer Care centre in South Delhi, they gladly gave a connection and accepted the copies of valid and acceptable proof of identity as wel...l as proof of residence. The number started functioning within a few hours. By then the mandatory physical verification of the residential address was prevalent and after a week or so a person knocked on the door. His tone and tenor was uncivil and he presented himself as if he was a bent law enforcement officer. As many are aware the verification personnel is to check whether the address mentioned in the proof of address is a valid one and secondly they check whether the customer resides in that particular address, for how many years he has resided and whether it is a leased/rented or an owned property. This chap decided that he was a quasi law enforcement officer and wanted to know how one came about to reside here, which tax bracket one belonged to and demanded the submission of at least two additional self attested proof of identity documents and proof of residence documents and pose for a photo in front of the residential address with family members. One was polite for the initial minute or so but a temper simmered enough to ask him to show his id, tables turned and he said that he was not carrying one and after shouting him down he meekly showed an id of an agency which he claimed was doing the work on behalf of Airtel. When one got in touch with the Airtel store from where the connection was purchased he stated that his job was simply to verify the existence of the address and whether one resided in that address and nothing in additional. The Airtel store person profusely apologised and stated that the person will be dealt with along-with the agency who sent him for the verification. Have you tried emailing MTNL customer care and sharing the problem faced in your locality ? They nowadays send a team of technicians to the BTS tower serving your locality and improve the coverage. It will also aid them to install another BTS tower in case they find that the present BTS is overloade...d and the culprit behind slow speeds. One wonders what happened to MTNL from its golden era, as Zaysen2002 has experienced and endorsed, to its current pitful era when signal appear and disappear just as leprechauns do and voice clarity the less said the better (quite literally).
They got a first mover advantage in setting up of 3G a...nd initially they efficiently rolled it out, however, with the advent of their competitiors in the 3G eco-system they have gone with the wind and speeds are stubbornly below the speed what other operators provide. With three of the big five opeartors allowed to share their 3G spectrum with others on a pan-India basis MTNL has lost out on the inherent advantage that it possessed of providing pan-India 3G coverage due to its symbiotic relationship with BSNL, although technically BSNL-MTNL remain the only pan-India 3G service provider since the tie-up amongst the three of the big five has excluded the Odisha Telecom Circle for now.
The silver lining though is that their billing remains transparent and are squeaky clean in preventing over-billing (much like their sister concern BSNL), and their tariffs remain comparatively low.
When they have shown in the past they can perform, one can only hope that they get their groove back and give their competitors a real tough fight in terms of overall quality of service.Read More

You have done a good SWAT test of MTNL GSM services. I concur with you that the billing process is to be trusted unlike some other competitiors of theirs. However, I strenuously stress that the GSM service of MTNL in Delhi is pretty bad and inexcusable since they function in an urbane telecom circle.... What prevents them from improving their service is a mystery. The sudden disappearance of 2G and non presence in many areas of 3G signal even in Central Business District is mind-boggling. Lets hope reviews of loyal customers, such as you, awakens MTNL from their deep slumber. I must say that Dolphin is an appropriate name for their cellular service, just as Dolphins splash in and out of the water while in locomotion the Dolphin network's signal too appears and disappears!Read More
