Hi shekhar, It feels good to make a difference in the world. I recommend you stay away from anything that NIIT is doing. They have spoilt their reputation and I dont think they will ever get it back. So please dont take any chances. As for your problem, well, you can enter into the software i...ndustry by several means. For example, you can get certifications of MCSD, SUN Java certification etc... These certifications are valued in the industry. You can ask your friends in CSE / IT department to guide you to learn Java / .NET or other languages. If you are seeking formal training in this field then I highly recommend going in for CDAC's DAC ( Diploma in Advanced Computing ). This is valued in the industry and is a Government of India initiative so it definitely holds much more credit than NIIT / Aptech or any of these buggers ever will. CDAC is a very renowned name and definitely maintains much higher standards and their institutes have very good placements. I would recommend that you join CDAC and finish DAC then you can go in for additional certifications like MCSD, Sun Java or whichever you prefer. Hope i helped!Read More

Looks like my reply wouldnt fit in one post. Continuing here... I am well aware of what 64bit architecture does. Transporting 64bit info at one time is same as feeding more instructions per second. Lastly, GNU/Linux has full support for 64bit architecture. The only problem is the current apps ...are optimised for 32bit and not 64bit. So you have a compromise there. *But* and this is a big BUT, when the apps are recompiled for (i dont mean optimised, just recompiled) 64bit architecture then they show a good performance gain. It's not like windows where AMD64 CPU has to run in 32bit emulation mode. Even then it shows very good performance. On the windows front, Win XP 64bit is yet to show up. God knows what security holes they have this time.Read More

I looked in your profile. Looks like you reside outside India(US I guess). In Indian market Hitachi is an unknown brand. Ofcourse corporates may be using it. But for home users(for whom i have written the review) Seagate and Samsung are the only well known brands. A few years ago I tried some 'Quant...um' harddrive(cant remember the manufacturer) and it was worthless. In my 10 years with the PC I have bought 10 Seagate HDDs. The only failure I had was with an old 260MB(yes MB) HDD. So I am very much a Seagate loyalist. As far as my experience with samsung goes, well its enough to say that I have used Samsung for a very long time, without a single failure. They are very reliable. You wrote: 'AMD processors were notorious for their overheating.' I may beg to differ. Overheating occurs only due to a lack of cooling. If a standard cooling solution is used, AMD CPUs generally run @ 42C and shows a variation of about 4-8C. But you would expect it to run hotter in India(if run in a non-AC environment) In contrast to that my P4 runs much hotter(48C) and shows a much more variation in temperature(upto 15C, yep it can heat upto 62-63C). Th next point you raised was of the motherboard...IMO all motherboards now-a-days(including the cheapest) are equipped with 8X AGP slots. Of late intel's gransdale(?) motherboard is equipped *only* with PCI Express. So the buyer only needs to check whether its an AGP or PCI Express slot. About the quality of graphics of onboard graphics cards...I am using Intel 865GBF motherboard which comes has it. But I use an ATi Radeon because I am a gaming freak(moderate though). The average Indian buyer is not going to spend Rs.30K+ on an ATi or NVidia card when the whole PC is costing him only Rs.20K+ or so. Read More

Here we go. What specifications should you look for while buying a PC? 1. CPU: Its speed is measured in GHz(Gigahertz). The higher is better. Good companies are: a) Intel b) AMD Both companies have good processor lines. I have used both Intel and AMD and found them equally good...Read more

i will update my review since SP2 has been released and tested. SP2 has sort of improved security but itself has very big security issues and when i mean big I mean huge! The security centre has big flaws, loopholes and vulnerabilities which allow a hacker to change the status of your firewall. F...or example: your firewall is actually down but the security centre shows that its up and protecting you... IMO thats more dangerous. Someone might be doing mischeif behind your back and you wont know it because M$ security centre shows everything is ok! heh. anuj: do you run any kind of firewall or IDS(intrusion detection system)? Scandisk and Chkdsk is not going to tell you if you have a virus or someone has hacked your system ;).Read More

Thanks for your comment. I have more than 10 friends to back my claims. We were all in the same branch. These guys are just after money. Recently during our technical festival they had put up a stall in our college and they took around 100 bucks from each registrant for the aptitude test. I did m...y best to keep as many innocent students away from them as possible! ;)Read More

thankyou all for reading my review. truly speaking, i wasnt expect so many people to actually read my review on Linux so soon ;). aadi: yeah i will try to explain things in layman's terms more often. sharp: clearly Linux has to go a long way. I was reviewing RH9 just because it has sentimental... values ;). It was my stepping stone to the world of Linux. Try out SuSE or Fedora Core 2 (3 is out but its still unstable). balagi: you seem to be a techical person so i will explain you this in technical terms... RH 9 to Fedora update shouldn't be expected at all. For that matter Fedora 1 to Fedora 2 is quite buggy too. So doing a fresh install is always more sensible. With the advent of KDE 3.2.x and Gnome 2.6.x the Linux desktop has improved a *lot* esp. Redhat/Fedora. Though if you are really a hardcore Linux user you will use some lighter DE like Windowmaker or something... IMO Fedora has a future because... 1. SuSE is too desktop like OS. 2. Mandrake is cool but again more desktop oriented. 3. Debian/Gentoo <- killer source based distros! But require a network install for full functionality. Also, updates/patches are delivered by network so a big no no in India...(unless you are running a corporate server) :*( 4. Redhat/Fedora - what makes this special is it strikes a beautiful balance between a server OS and a desktop OS. Besides its very userfriendly. It's still the best binary based distro imho ;)Read More

thank you for your kind words. anuj: oracle 9i shouldnt have any problem setting up on Win2k, since its an NT based OS. Also, i dont think you have a 24x7 connection. I have one and only I know how many break in attempts I have per day ;). Thats why I use Linux and my other computer running WinXP... sits nicely behind it, well protected. A word of caution Sygate firewall by default too leaves some ports open. You might wanna run a port scanner to be sure. aadi: i was concentrating on making this review content rich as the last two seem more of rants than reviews. cousin2: i like WinXPs functionality i just hope M$ would've made it more secure...Read More

i just bought a Samsung syncmaster 591s and its superb! You should ideally get a hardware vendor to bring it and install it at your place, that way if its defective in the sealed condition he can take it back and replace it immediately :)
