starry_eyes pointed out in the comments section that the sunlight neo and trinity saw was real.. Maybe its right and maybe its wrong. It can be wrong coz humans actually created these artificial intelligent machines which harnessed their energy from the sun as they were solar pow...ered. When these machines started to attack humans ,they (hunmans)destroyed the sun to destroy their energy source. So the humans were captured and were used in a form of a battery which were planted in endless fields. That is what we saw in revolutions when neo and trinity went to the machine world i.e. the fields itself
That is where the concept of matrix evolved as ''the humans were no longer born, they were grown'' and were inserted into the matrix where do do what they were programmed to do. Their minds were in control of the machines or in other words they were 'unplugged'

Zion was athe last human city of rebellions deep down the earth core where it was still warm(rem. that the sun was destroyed by the humans). The machines attacked zion coz they were the threat to the matrix and machine world. The rebellions were disturbing the 'control' which was the ultimate concept of the matrix
