what is missing?

By: lovesreading | Posted Jul 08, 2013 | General | 571 Views

While carrying out with routine activities, I get a call. My sister on the other end

"hi, wassup"? "nothing much". "so what are you up to?" "nothing yaar, just chal rahaa hai yaar, tu bata". " kuch khaas nahi, aise hi chal raha hai"!!! And then the conversation turns to the present task or the latest movie. Did we miss something? Well...

We are busy with our lives, those typical things of cooking, taking care of house, bills, children etc. Beyond that catching up with good movies ( which happens once in a while), an online game perhaps or good food, or a nice outing. And what do we miss out? Something which we used to passionately pursue during our childhood despite the fact we had bigger goal known as "studies". Our HOBBIES!

It starts out as a nice change from boring studies which then changes to innumerable hours devoted during school holidays and sometimes even threatens to convert into a necessity or passion. IT could be anything as collecting stamps, collecting odd objects and building something unique out of it, a collection of rare objects that are traded with friends for something equally precious or hobby as in art like drawing, cartooning, painting, music, dance etc. Any indoor or outdoor activity until it suddenly takes a backseat when further studies or jobs take center stage. Out of worry to excel or lack of time, we consider our hobby as secondary, until one day we see our kids perhaps developing the same interest...(nostalgic isn't it?)

So where do they vanish? My personal interest was books and reading more books. Somehow job and then family , kid grabbed more time and books remained pleasant but distant memory. Reading was very limited and I considered myself plain lucky in case I completed the whole newspaper of that day.

Almost all of us want to go for a world tour, earn more, eat healthier, get more holidays ... the wishlist is endless. Unfortunately we never think of devoting time to our hobby. Although if you are in touch with it, you very well know that it would atleast for a while make you forget the stress.

Hobbies are extension of your personality. If you are angry, they make you calmer. If you are calm, they make you happier. If you are bored, they help you get pre-occupied. Who knows one day you may make your hobby as profession too or earn extra alongwith your regular job. If not, still find time for it. Perhaps as we age, we may not have as much energy for it especially in the outdoor activities. Atleast we wouldn't end up saying "aise hi... bas chal rahaa hai"!

Why do we easily give up on hobbies as we grow into adults? In my case horrible discoveries like telephone and idiot box lured me into it. Then the laziness and now the toddler. I was unable to devote time for reading. Nowadays I sleep 10 mts late or wake up 10 mts earlier and read. Atleast those 20 mts make me happier and calmer when I am with a book/ a blog/ a piece of writing/ news online. Hope I extend those 20 mts and devote more time in my favourite hobby.

Are you still pursuing your hobbies? Or given up?
