August 12 is celebrated as the World Elephant Day to draw the attention of those who are not aware of the atrocities being faced by the majestic mammal. The dwindling number of elephants in Asia and Africa resulted in the launch of the inaugural World Elephant Day in 2012.


Here are the list of some facts which you probably did not know, even I came across them now just wished to share through Blog(This blog is Not mine research)!




  1. Elephants can differentiate between men and women, and between different ethnicities, when they hear a voice.




  2. The largest elephant on record weighed about 10,886 kg with a height of 13 feet.




  3. Elephants can get sunburned so they protect themselves with sand.




  4. About 100 elephants are being killed every day for their ivory.




  5. African elephants have the best sense of smell in the animal kingdom.




  6. Elephant brains can weigh as much as 5 KG, more than the brain of any other land animal.




  7. Elephants are scared of bees.




  8. Elephants normally only sleep 2 or 3 hours each day.




  9. An adult elephant requires up to 300 kg of food and 160 litres of water per day.




  10. An elephant's pair of tusks may exceed 200 kg.




  11. Elephants are pregnant for 2 years.




  12. Elephants can hear one another's trumpeting calls up to 8 kilometers away.




  13. Elephants can detect rain 150 miles away.
