The Aroma
My little daughter asked me
Walking down the street,
Ma, who pinned the leaves on trees,
Was it elves or dwarfs of pretty fairies?
Then it really struck me
very loud and sharp and clear
how deprived the childhood
is of the city bred kid.
Germination is a chapter
in the Science text book
unrelated to life
as they live it
since adults can’t be bothered to teach it.
Milk is something in packets
Flavoured to hide the smell
What is for us the heavenly aroma
For them is an unbearable stink.
