And you thought guarantee was a promise by the manufacturer for the quality of his product. No, not any more.


When you buy a consumer durable ( TV , Refrigerator, AC etc) you are impressed with , 1 year guarantee / 3 years and so on. Well, this has just led many companies to cash in on the love for guarantee by the consumer.


Pesky marketing calls, that manage to catch you just when you do not want to be disturbed, have not stopped. The insurance company vouches that they will pay you if you are healthy and protect you if you do not have an accident, agents that help you save on tax if you pay up of course etc.


Now there is this new genre of callers, who name the product and brand that you are in possession along with the date of its purchase. You are taken a back initially and then fathom how difficult is it for the dealer / company to know when you made this purchase. The caller goes on to say that the guarantee is set to expire in say another 4- 6 months. This gives you a jolt, as you have just learnt to use the product to its fullest. Then goes on to say, don’t despair , you can buy 3 more years of limited guarantee for a 3 digit price tag and unlimited guarantee with 4 digit tags, don’t forget conditions apply*.


Whatever happened to those chest thumping ads claiming ‘ most advanced technologies used ‘ that are beamed between your favorite serials and matches . The advancements in technology have led to diminishing guarantees I conclude.
