This post is to show other side of this rivalry through my POV. Feel free to thrash me:
This reply is not meant to offend anyone. I humbly request fans that please don't bring down others to make your favorite star big. And this debate is actually fruitless because neither Shahrukh nor Salman are going to read this. Still I'll go ahead and waste few minutes of my life on this comment.
- Godfather
If Salman Khan had his father's influence, he would have been launched by a big budget film. His first role was in the film Biwi ho to aisi and not a very significant one. He gave audition for Maine Pyar Kiya, started working with then struggling Rajshri banner with a first time director Suraj Barjatya.
If fathers can establish their sons' career Fardeen Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan, Zayed Khan, Isha Deol, Twinkle/Rinky Khanna, Akshay Khanna, Bobby Deol etc would have been ruler of this indusry.
Shahrukh after achieving success with DDLJ and KKHH set up a camp with Choparas n Johar. I can't recall any hit movies outside these two camps. No doubt, he beginned as a struggler.

Yes, Salman had a bad boy image. But he has image of kind hearted man with "to the face" and "care a damn" attitude. He has worked on his image makeover and thankfully improved a lot in last few years. That's why people like him because Salman can connect better with common people of India.
Shahrukh is going downwords in this regard. His cheap jokes, arrogant behavior in public shows is not going down well with normal public. For some time, his relation with Priyanka has few question marks but still he has maintained his image of family man.
- Court Case
Salman is accused not proven guilty. Even Shahrukh has been inquired few times for financial irregularities in IPL. Shahrukh is a business partner with Morani who is proven guilty and in jail now. Still he takes his side, launched his daughter and never feel wrong for having business relationship with a criminal.
- Hits
Shahrukh has no doubt better track record in terms of BO. Shahrukh has always been ambitious. He established camp with Johars n Chopras. His PR work is awesome and with his hard work, he has been superstar for quite some time.
Salman has never been serious about his film career except last 2-3 years. Imagine, if he would have been selective like now then... But only Salman can be blamed for his casual approach.
- Fans
No doubt, Shahrukh is the most popular bollywood actor overseas. Domestically, HE IS NOT. Aamir and Salman are in the same league closely followed by Hrithik and Ajay. His Ra.one has yet to overtake Ready in domestic BO collection, forget Dabangg n Bodyguard.
