That's the reason very few us us has a genuine hobby. Well with no offense by genuine hobby I mean creating music not listening to music. Everybody listens to music, it’s not exactly a hobby.
Let’s look into another aspect of our culture. Our work culture demands that you respect your boss or the person you are reporting to. In my early job life I have seen people used to sit in office and finding ways to spend time but not leaving the desk, just to impress boss. Well to be honest most of bosses like that, bits me but that's the reality. In such a culture the online shopping exactly fits at right place. How !!
If someone is idle and has a genuine hobby, his time will be spent in gaining expertise in the area. If my hobby is surfing, I would spend time in watching videos and finding right places to surf, learning online from the experts etc. Similarly a home brewer will look into how to improvise his brewing process in free time. Now if I don't have a hobby and I am idle and I have to be in office for x hours, what are my options? Social media is a natural way but after you have logged in you quickly click on an ad and in no time you are spending time in looking into items in some online shopping. Next they have your email id and they keep sending you attractive advertisement and offer. Even if you have been postponing items that are of lesser priority to you; with ease of access you are browsing through them. Well the shopping sites also know this and with discount coupons they are aggravating your desire. With one click you have bought your less priority item you wanted long back.
Well what's wrong, nothing.. This is just how a business takes natural advantage in certain culture..
