No Sorry, No Thank You?

By: Shalu.D | Posted Jun 23, 2009 | General | 7573 Views

Dosti mein no sorry no thank you - as a kid this was drilled in my head by popular media. It sounded so good to me and all my friends. We are true friends, we thought. We don’t need the formality of ‘sorry’ or ‘thank you’!

Of course like all silly notions of childhood, this one also died a natural death. How could it not when I realized that this mantra was making me lose my friends? But it taught me one thing – we can never take our relationships for granted.

Each and every relationship needs to be worked on – whether its family, friends or colleagues. And I have realized that ‘sorry’ and ‘thank you’ are two magic words that can made our dear ones feel good in a jiffy.

So many times we lose someone only because we were too proud to say sorry. We keep expecting the other to apologise and when that doesn’t happen we just ‘chuck it’. There have been instances when I have let a friend go because of a minor argument. Years later when I look back with regret I don’t remember the argument, I only remember my stupidity. ‘Sorry’ is such a small word but there is this big thing called ego which stops us from saying it.

But I wonder what stops people from saying ‘thank you’? By saying thank you we get to express our gratitude and the person receiving it feels warm and appreciated. And isn’t that we all want – to get appreciated? Last night an unexpected ‘thank you’ sms from a friend made my day…err...night. I felt like thanking her back for making me feel so good!

So lets chuck the ego. Lets say sorry even if we are not wrong, if it saves a relationship its worth it. Lets say thank you, lets appreciate other’s efforts. Lets show we care!
