I loved my first job. Those days there were no qualified Engineers in Sugar factories and my supervisors were only had school education and they never allow me to work or teach me anything. So I had tough time with all my subordinates and it was very difficult to handle a shift independently. I told my Factory Manager about my problem. He immediately sent me for training to machinery manufacturers factorties, like Buckau Wolf, Larsen & Toubro, Walchandnagar Industries, Triveni Engg., ISGEC John Thompson etc., and also National Sugar Institute Of Sugar Technology, Kanpur.
When I returned, I had better knowledge than others.
I love playing guitar. Normally Sugar factories are in small villages, near Sugar cane fields. There is no entertainment facilities around. With the permission of management I started a club, prepared Tennis court, Volley Ball, Badminton courts. I also stated indoor games like Table Tennis, Chess, Carom Board etc. To satisfy those who like to play cards, I introduced playing cards table!
One of the famous Cine Directors, Mr. A.Bhim Singh's son was my College mate in Engineering. With his help I got one 16mm projector and built an open-air theater! He arranged to send films to screen every Saturday. I became popular and I was doing good in my profession also.
Soon I was promoted as Senior Engineer and then to Project Engineer, as the factory was expanding to handle higher capacity of Sugar projection. I started conducting sports day every year and organised inter-factories (Sugar) matches with surrounding Sugar factories.
In 1972 Sports day I introduce a new race..'Donkey Race'! Factory Manager was so excited and told me that I could conduct the same but I also should participate. I had no choice!
Those days the Dhobies bring Donkeys to collect old clothes for washing. I caught hold of my Dhoby and asked him to train me to ride donkey! He had 3 Donkeys...I selected one and had training every day! When they day came there were 10 donkeys with participants from different departments, I represented Mechanical Engineering department.....(Picture attached...hope you are able to identify me!).
There were more than 2000 spectators including my MD and other Senior officers. OMG.....I came First with my donkey! The crowed rushed and literally lifted me up and started running around!
( The donkey brought also luck...I was then sent to Germany and Australia for further training!)
