With a rising fall in the number of female students enrolling the prestigious IIT's. A committee was set up to address the issue and come up with a solution
As per the reports, the committee has come up with a suggestion to create up to 20 per cent supernumerary seats for girls out of the total number of seats
“The 20% supernumerary seats will be filled by female candidates who have qualified JEE-Advanced. Also, they should be in the top 20 percentile in their respective board exams,” said a source.
The committee's recommendation will be up for discussion in the Joint admission board(JAB) meeting before it is put into action. The meeting will be held to decide whether the reservation will come into effect from this year or 2018.
However, IIT's will have the freedom to decide the number of seats depending on the facilities and the need
The IITs can choose to make an increase of up to 20% for female student enrolment
“The number of seats for male candidates will not be affected and this will help IITs achieve the 1 lakh target by 2020. Also, only candidates who have already qualified in JEE-Advanced will be considered,” said a source.
Other than this, the committee has also made certain other recommendations at school level considering the bigger picture
