Honey I Sniffed the Ball

By: indian1969 | Posted Feb 02, 2010 | Cricket | 907 Views

The Curious Case of Shahid Afridi, seems to grow curiouser and curiouser day by day. More curiouser than the Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland.

Shahid "Boom Boom" Afridi was caught biting on a cricket ball in full view of the 24 cameras. Now unless Boom Boom mistook the cricket ball for an apple, why would some one try to bite it. And with all the mud and sweat on it, it sure ain't a tasty dish in any way. Ball tampering is stupid, but to do when you have 24 cameras zooming at you, needs a particular kind of stupidity. And when you are an international player with over a decade's experience, to do this kind of act, is positively retarded. But then clear thinking has never been one of Shahid Afridi's virtues.

A once in a blue moon player, who ocassionally scores and then goes into deep slumber most of the time, for me he was a mediocre batsman at best, though his bowling was useful. Geoff Boycott once remarked he had the "brains of a chocolate mouse".Actually I feel mouse would have had better brains than Mr. Boom Boom.

So what was his defence caught biting, "I was hungry and desperate to win, at least one match".I guess he got so hungry that he began to bite the red cherry, imagining it to be a real cherry. Making a mess is bad, but trying to excuse yourself making a mess is positively stupid.

And now Afridi says "I was just sniffing the ball". Errr, I thought you sniffed with your nose, not with your teeth. Or can we use teeth also for sniffing. Very confusing.

What is worse is some commentators, and cricket fans, trying to justify Afridi's behaviour, and saying he should be captain, because he is aggressive. Err, such kind of aggresiveness, may or may not win a match, but for sure, it ends up making you look like jokers, which is what the present day Pakistan cricket team looks like.
