TERI BAATON MEIN AISA ULJHA JIYA SAILS THROUGH DESPITE A MIXED WORD OF MOUTH

Last week’s release Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya has had a decent run at the box office and in fact, has performed better than expectations. In last week’s edition, we had predicted that the Shahid Kapoor-Kriti Sanon starrer will open at around Rs. 5 crores and has an outside chance of hitting the Rs. 6 crores mark. However, the film managed to have an opening of Rs. 6.75 crores.

The word of mouth for the film was mixed and hence, there was a fear that it might not grow much over the weekend. Hence, it was a pleasant surprise when Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya collected Rs. 9.50 crores and Rs. 10.25 crores on Saturday and Sunday respectively. In short, it collected Rs. 26.50 crores in three days. On Monday, it had a normal drop as it accumulated Rs. 3.50 crores. The Tuesday drop was minimal – Rs. 3.40 crores – since the next day was a holiday-of-sorts. On Valentine’s Day, the film’s earnings zoomed to nearly Rs. 6 crores, which is close to what it earned on the day of release. The first week’s collections are expected to be around Rs. 42-43 crores.

However, what benefited Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is that the makers implemented the buy-one-ticket-get-one-ticket-free offer from Monday. This tempted many more viewers to see the film. On February 14, the scheme turned out to be a godsend for couples. A section of the industry hasn’t appreciated this move and feels that it could set a dangerous precedent. One also wonders if the offer will be extended into the second week and if not, will the film suffer a bigger fall than normal from Friday?

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya won’t have much of a competition tomorrow. The major Hindi release is Kuch Khattaa Ho Jaay, starring Guru Randhawa and Saiee Manjrekar. Dashami and Aakhir Palaayan Kab Tak also hit screens on February 16. All these three films stand no chance. The film that has some chances this week is the Hollywood superhero saga, Madame Web. The casting is interesting and though it has been panned by Western critics, it’ll still get footfalls, at least in the weekend.
