This Week’s Topics: SRIDEVI NOT ALLOWED TO COMEBACK!
A particular news which I read on Monday in the Mumbai tabloid ‘Mumbai Mirror’ enraged me to a great extent. According to the news, after the success of Veer-Zaara, Yash Chopra finally decided to don the director’s hat again. He found a suitable story and approached Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi for the film. While BigB loved the concept of the film and agreed immediately, Sridevi too liked the story but decided that she will agree only if her husband-producer Boney Kapoor gives him the permission. And her great husband refused to allow Sridevi. He said that he too was keen in re-launching his wife. He doesn’t have a story ready at present and his hands are full of other projects. So he would re-launch her some time later.
Yash Chopra tried to explain him that he has a story ready and his film would also prove to be an excellent relaunch vehicle for Sridevi. Morevoer, even Bachchan and his friend Amar Singh stepped in to convince Boney, but he didn’t relent. Finally, Yash Chopra decided to drop his idea, since he felt that Sridevi was the only one who suited for the role.
Sridevi the ‘Hawa Hawai’ girl, who began her carrer in the South, was the most popular actress during the 80s and 90s. She captured millions of hearts worldwide and performed in more than 60 Hindi movies. Her last movie was Judaai after which she got married to Boney Kapoor.
Earlier because of Boney, Sridevi didn’t got a chance to be the part of the song ‘Deewangi Deewangi’ of Om Shanti Om which featured 31 stars. When Farah Khan approached her, she asked for Boney’s permission who said that he too would like to do an appearance in the song! But Farah rejected him saying that only actors and actresses are a part of the song. Since Boney wasn’t allowed, Sridevi also backed off. However, Sridevi did a cameo in Halla Bol only because Boney Kapoor was there with her in the scene.
It’s unfortunate to see Boney Kapoor preventing Sridevi from acting in films. Just because he’s her husband, does it mean that he has full control over her life and her decisions? Agreed that she has 2 kids and she can’t do films often, but it just doesn’t seem fair on the part of Boney Kapoor to reject a film and that too of Yash Chopra for her wife? Previously, even Madhuri Dixit did a film with Yash Raj Films (Aaja Nachle) and they took utmost care to see to it Madhuri’s children doesn’t have to stay away from her for a long time.
Yash Raj Films may be churning out disasters, but Yash Chopra is always been selecting the right scripts for his directorial films and does total justice to them. The recent Veer-Zaara, Dil To Pagal Hai and the oldies Darr, Silsila, Kabhie Kabhie etc are the classic examples.
Now because of Boney Kapoor’s ‘zid’ prevented a fantastic idea of an experienced filmmaker to be transferred into celluloid! Very unfortunate!
