PRIYANKA VS PARINEETI CLASH TOMORROW
The inevitable will happen tomorrow as Priyanka Chopra-starrer Zanjeer and Shuddh Desi Romance, starring Priyanka’s cousin Parineeti Chopra are all set to release tomorrow. As of now, Shuddh Desi Romance seems to have an edge over Zanjeer. My analysis:
ZANJEER: As we all know by now, this is the remake of the iconic Zanjeer that catapulted Amitabh Bachchan to stardom. Ram Charan steps into Big B’s shoes while Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Raj, Sanjay Dutt and Mahie Dill reprise the roles played by Jaya Bachchan, Ajit, Pran and Bindu in the original. The plot has bit slightly tweaked in keeping with the modern times and Inspector Vijay here will be shown fighting the oil mafia. A new character of a journalist has been introduced which is played by Atul Kulkarni. While the idea behind oil mafia was derived from the Sonawane killing, Atul Kulkarni’s character is inspired from J Dey, the journalist who was assassinated in 2011. The promo was fairly decent, though a section of audience was aghast with the remake of such a significant film. Some are of the opinion that Ram Charan doesn’t have the persona and attitude to step into Big B’s big shoes. Also, casting Sanjay Dutt as Sher Khan hasn’t gone down well too and the manner in which Dutt dances in the Khochey Pathan track (inspired from Yaari Hai Imaan song) is highly embarrassing! Priyanka too doesn’t seem to be at her best and from the promos, her character seems to be an irritant! On the positive side, the entire oil mafia episode can be an interesting watch. The film might open well in the single-screens. After that, the film will pick up only on the basis of the word of mouth. If that doesn’t happen, the film will be in big trouble.
SHUDDH DESI ROMANCE: This flick is directed by Band Baaja Baaraat and Ladies VS Ricky Bahl director Maneesh Sharma. Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra, Vaani Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor, Shuddh Desi Romance impressed highly with the first teaser that featured the much-loved ‘Ek Chidiya’ song. The trailer too has been fairly impressive and the same goes for the songs. The makers have very well played with the small town element which will be a major factor in pulling the audiences to theatres, as evident from the promos. Moreover, Rishi Kapoor’s character should add to the fun moments in the film. On the flipside, the buzz for the film isn’t strong. A section of audience is aghast with the live-in and pre-marital sex element of the film and are wondering what’s so ‘shuddh’ and ‘desi’ about the romance shown in the film! The film is being publicized with results of a recently conducted survey that throws light on what people feel about pre-marital sex, live-in etc and the hypocrisy that exists in our society in the same context. And it seems that’s what the film depicts as well. Romcoms can be a big hit among the largest chunk of moviegoing audience – the youth. Hence, if the word of mouth is positive, Shuddh Desi Romance can significantly pick up and work big time, commercially.
