WILL BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG MEET THE MAMMOTH EXPECTATIONS?

There are some films that seem winners and a must watch from their first promo itself. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is one of them. The ‘Zinda’ song coupled with stunning scenes of Farhan Akhtar’s rippling body and the manner in which he flawlessly essays Milkha Singh made a tremendous impact. This impact didn’t wither away and the film remained one of the most awaited films of almost every moviegoer. Few had reservations with Farhan playing Milkha but to me, he’s an ideal choice. And from the dialogue promos, it is also evident that he has got the accent correct as well. Also, he prepared himself extensively to play the coveted part and the results are there to see. Besides Farhan, the film stars Sonam Kapoor, Prakash Raj, Divya Dutta, Pawan Malhotra, Art Malik, Yograj Singh and Dalip Tahil. Special mention should go to Tahil who plays Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and it is said that he looks exactly like the first PM of the country. Besides, the film also stars Rebecca Breeds who has made many people curious, especially the relationship of her character with the Flying Sikh. Music is good, thought not great, with Zinda being the best of the lot.

What can go against the film is the lack of star value to an extent. Also, the film is releasing around the commencement of holy month of Ramzan, due to which a section of audience will be away from theatres for almost a month. And this might affect the film’s prospects though one can’t be sure. After all, last year, films like Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum, Jism 2 etc did reasonably good business, especially in their first weeks, which proves films can work during Ramzan too. If the film is a well made inspirational flick, it surely deserves to be watched and make a healthy profit. Let’s hope for the best!

And once again, during Ramzan, multiple films would be releasing week after week which is nothing short of a suicide by the makers of these films. Tomorrow itself, along with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, 4 more films will hit screens – Boyss Toh Boyss Hain, Sixteen, Shorts and Tara. Boyss Toh Boyss Hain stars Raj Kumar Yadav, whose popularity skyrocketed post Kai Po Che. Yet, the dated film has hardly made any noise. Besides, promos and songs are terrible. Shorts, like Bombay Talkies, boasts of multiple stories made by directors mentored by Anurag Kashyap. Although Huma Qureshi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadda, Vineet Singh are a part of the flick, promotion has been negligible and hardly anyone knows about the flick. Tara lacks any popular names. Sixteen is the only film of the lot that has made some awareness and seems interesting but again, buzz isn’t that huge. Film might work on DVD/TV if not in theatres!

2 weeks later, on July 26, 9 films will hit screens and 6 films are scheduled to release a week later! In other words, the tally of flops is going to increase significantly in the coming weeks. Sad!
