Feminism : A Myth?

By: adams_periwinkle | Posted Sep 04, 2014 | General | 128 Views | (Updated Sep 05, 2014 09:58 AM)

The term Feminist, is often misunderstood by most people. Feminism is not about fighting for the rights of women alone, it is about equality in gender.According to the Oxford Dictionary a Feminist is a person who believes in the equalities of the sexes.

Though the war for women empowerment is still raging in some parts of native america and most rural villages of India, the metropolitan cities have molded themselves to accept women in the in the professional front, which was, for a long time considered the domain of a Man.

But have we truly understood the need for feminism? Most women have struggled to create an identity of their own. The right to education, right to profession, the right to equal status in society. We have fought all these battles, yet still, we are at the receiving of some patronizing stares. Have men accepted us as equals or are they still under the influence, that we need to be taken care of?

Famous Feminist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie states that "We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls', You can have ambition, but not too much'." There are families even in the metropolitan cities that do not encourage their daughters to study further or even pursue a career let alone to betroth a groom of their choice.

When we say, we have come a long way in terms of progress; Have we really? The age old customs of Sati may have been discontinued but have we really resolved the ongoing fight of the sexes.

The time for change is ripe, and change should start here. It should start with you!
