The assamese folklore is as famous as the bihu itself! Ofcourse its the most ethenic part of indian culture and tradition. The bihu mainly the bhogali(mid january) also called magh bihu. The word bhogali is termed from the word bhog(eating and festing) at the end of the day remarkably known as uruka the young men go to the field and build a makeshift usually of straw and paddy bamboo banana leaves etc near a river which is known as bhelaghar at night the young men roam in the village stealing fire and collecting vegetables rice etc for the fest. The entire night is spent around the bhelaghar singing dancing people prepare foods(pitha, laru) and spend the night. The next day the people take bath and burn the bhelaghar(meji) and exchange sweets foods etc, the young seek bleesings from the old there is happiness all around. This tradition is as old as the assamese culture itself. Bihu is known as makar sankranti in other parts of india and by other names in different states
