Aam Aadmi Learns in Train: How Apartments are Named, When Sita is the Wife of Ravana ! ;-)

By: paulose | Posted Jun 15, 2009 | Notes From an Observer | 883 Views

Mujrim Haajir Hain: Hi friends here I am again expressing my deepest apologies for missing out your writings last 2 months – I wont take the blame, I will blame recession! ;-) You may have just missed a non-sense comment, but the loss is mine – considering how much I learn (new phrases included) from what MS. I hope to be on your writings sooner.

Train2Chennai: 15days back, I had to make a quick trip to Chennai – started early morning from Bangalore & returned by night – that way, I didn’t have any chance to bother any Chennai Msians :P

Trivia: can you guess the area of Chennai I visited. Hint: it has something to do with mango! The correct answer wins MS gifts ;-)

What a View: As the train was entering Chennai, I was watching outside. Behold wat a view. I saw an apartment complex, medium sized – its name ‘Track view’!! It really made me think at how simple the name was. The guys on both sides were asleep, so I thought of sharing my amusent with MSians by way of this sms.

Thoughts Triggered: I always have an eye for names & ids. I wonder what it means even I hear a name like ‘ching ping lee’. All names must mean something, in some language! Same way, I also wonder about apartment names. The only time I sung on road was while looking for a apartment complex. I sang ‘ek diwana sheher mein, aashiyana doondtha hain… “ – I was looking for Aashiyana apartments! ;-)

Often its fashionable to have English names for apartment complexes, though our own many Indian languages have wonderful, meaningful words. I see apartment names having words like ‘magnolia’, ‘belveder’ etc words, whose meaning I still do not know. Also it’s observed that apartments with English names are costlier! :P

One of the cliché words to have in apartment name is ‘View’ – if there is something mentionable in front of the apartment, then it will be most likely be ‘that something + view’ apartments. By the way, I have seen huge drainages in front of some apartment complexes, but they were not named ‘Drain-view’, nor did I ever come across a ‘Rain-view’ apts. Also I found no School-view or Class view even if they were next to schools/colleges! May be these are not romantic :P I have no hopes of finding ‘truck-view’, ‘accident view’ or ‘road-view’ apts in front of highways, or even ‘ship view’ or ‘fish view’ near the shore! :P

Example: Park-view means there is some park in front – don’t mind even if the park is dry

Lake-view – there used to be a lake earlier – this apartment complex was built on encroached land, wat remains of the lake now is a small pond of the side of a swimming pool – still the apartment is lake-view!

Golf-view – this is superior to park view, and has golf lawn – though no one stands in its balconies to watch golf!

The Track view apartments looked simple, perhaps the builders were also simple folks. Once the work was over, they stood in balcony & looked out. They saw a railway track – thus was born the name Track-view. I am thankful them – bcos if they had named it Rail-view – govt of india had to make a train stand there permanently, so the name becomes justified. By the one of the best names for a house I ever heard was “Guhe” which in kannada means ‘Gufa’ or ‘Cave’!! u know who lived there – his name was CR Simha, a noted kannada cine artist. ( Simha in kannada means Lion! )

Have you seen or heard of interesting apartment/home names, do share in comments, lets find out/suggest why they were named so?

How Sita became wife of Ravana: While returning from Chennai next to me were a tamil couple, with a 3-4yr old boy & a 9month baby. Now the boy stood up on seat, addressing the ones seated behind us.( chair car). The aunties behind us were engaging the boy in a conversation, out of which I got to hear many ‘so sweeeeeet’ , ‘wow’ from the women behind. Seeing the son get ‘female attraction’ the mother felt proud, even while she was struggling to silence the crying baby. She says to the boy “kanna, Ramayana story chollu” ( son, tell the ramayan story). Soon his female fans also urged him to tell the story. He suddenly realized the train was his stage. He recalled everything & started. He began “sita ravanayude wifu” ( sita was wife of ravana), annikki Rama avare kidnap seyyuvar (then Rama came & kidnapped her” ! The whole audience burst into laughter at this kahani mein twist. I was glad no one from Sri Rama sene or sita sene were there to moral police this blasphemy :P. His mother was stunned & then someone from back asked “yaarappa Ramayana solliyadu” (kid, who taught you ramayan). The child laughingly said “mummy” !! at this I checked if the mummy had become a Egyptian mummy!! ;-)
