Basics of Iota

Iota originated with attempts to solve certain algebraic equations, such as x2 + 1 = 0

Iota stands for the square root of – 1.

Some values of iota that we should know.

Solving Powers of Iota

Step 1: Divide the power of iota by 4.

Step 2: The remainder left will now be the real power of iota. Forget the quotient; it is of no use now.

Step 3: Use the table above to calculate the value.

For ex.

To find values for in, where n > 4, we first divide n by 4, i.e. let n be a number of the form

n = 4m + r.

Then in = i4m+r= i4m × ir= ir
